Hi,

can somebody help me please? My bearing went on the water pump the other night, so I have managed to remove the water pump from engine. All I need to know now is how do you get the clutch assembly for the fan off the water pump so that it and the pulley can be fitted to the new water pump when I get it tomorrow?

The car is a 1992 520i with the M50 24v engine and engine driven fan. No AC either.

Cheers :(

Turn the bout to the side of the driver.
Just give a big smash to the bout.

The large (32 or 36mm) nut between the fan and water pump needs to be removed. correct open end wrench and a rubber mallet will do the trick. It is reverse threaded, rightey loosey, leftey tightey!

If the nut is too tight, go get a special BMW tool 115030. It will counter hold the coolant pump pulley.

If you are standing in front of the car, with the tool 115030 holding the pulley, use a 32mm wrench to give a hard and fast clockwise turn. (I fixed a rusted e46 from northern states before that I actually gave a Bruce Lee style kick to the wrench!) The trick is to turn hard and fast. If you warn out the rusted nut, it will be a costly mistake.
