Yes another question... Its our first BMW and It has a few issues and I am a dyi kinda guy. The car experiences less than optimal starting, often I need to very lightly apply throttle on starting. If I dont apply any peddle it will crank after a slightly extended turning of the starter. Once running the RPM's tend to fluctuate up and down sometimes stalling and will level off after a few seconds. this even occours when warm as well as cold. I have read in other posts about cleaning the idle controll valve and the butterfly assembly. Does anyone have an openion on this and are there any how to's availble on the net about this? Any input is welcome.

maybe you should follow the fuel path and air path first?

If this car new to you, you might want to start with the obvious.

When is the last time air filter and fuel filter were replaced? I would start there. Then drive the car for a week or so to see how that affects things.

Next is a bottle of Chevron's "Techron Fuel System Cleaner".

Then another week or two to see how it works out.

Idel Control Valve, butterfly, MAF, OS are further down the line.
