View Full Version : SMG Comparison

I am currently looking to buy either a used 2002 or 2003 M3. I am not sure whether I should go with SMG or the traditional Manual, however I am leaning more towards the SMG transmission. Is the SMG on an '02 different from the one in an '03...SMGI, SMGII?...if so how do they compare in terms of performance, reliability, recalls, etc? Has anyone had the opportunity to test both-see any differences? How does the SMG hold up in reliability compared to a manual? Thanks in advance!!....

I believe the smg is the same for all e46 m3s (smg ii). smg i was only available on euro e36 m3s
The SMG on the e46m3 is all the same. There are different software revisions that do have some effect though.

All the same. Once you get the service action performed on the rod bearins, you also get the latest SMG software. The software update is required as part of the service action.
