I followed the directions to initialize this after changing tire pressures.

I'm not sure if it worked right though.

I pressed and held the flat tire button thing until it lit up in the instrument cluster, but as soon as I put the car into drive, the light turned off. I mean immediately -- before I even moved.

I assumed from reading the directions that the light would stay on until I drove a little bit.
Here is what it says in the manual:

1. Start the engine, but do not begin to drive.
2. Press the button until the yellow indicator
lamp in the instrument cluster lights up for a
few seconds.
3. Begin driving.
It takes a few minutes until the Flat Tire Monitor
can detect and indicate a flat tire.

So is what I saw correct. Does the light in the instrument cluster go out as soon as you put it into drive? Should I just assume it is working right now?

you got it. Once the light goes out, it is reset. I've done it a few times, just as you described.

BUT does your light go out IMMEDIATELY -- like mine did?

It goes off after a few seconds of driving

It worked correctly. After pressing the button - if you see the icon in the display - you're done after it goes out.
