I don't know if this has been posted before, but my friend just sent this to me. It made me smile, not that I agree with it or anything. :eeps:

I don't think that guy (whoever made the false ad) would be saying that after driving the 130i and spanking cars that cost twice as much!

Exactly! A stock 130i can spank a stock 330i E46/E90 ...

in some ways it's right... it's ruining the name of BMW--- where there is so much prestige behind owning one. With cheaper cars like this... the name is being slowly diminished.

I like the 1 series, but I can understand the anger of the guys who make stuff like this.

I disagree- BMWs have always been about a pure and exciting driving experience. What's not to like about a lightweight car that has a technically advanced inline-6 that pumps out 260 ponies (not to mention the M version that might have over 300 horses) and is quite capable of shaming cars that cost twice as much? In my opinion, BMW needs to get back to their heritage and stop trying to compete with "prestigious luxury" brands and make more cars for drivers, like the one series.

Yeah you're right--- they're about performance. This 1 series looks like it will be very promising!

I drove a one series with the 3.3 liter Hamann engine a few weeks ago. If that car came to America, I'd loose my license in a few weeks

Well, nothing.

But it would help if it didn't look like a dork-mobile while doing it. (I admit the ad does not portray the car in the best light -- white, and with small-ish wheels...)

Those wheels have actually been p-chopped to look that small. The design in the spoof ad is a 16" design, which is more than enough for a car like this.

One problem a lot of Brits have - um, including me it must be said - is the open, brutal gouging that goes on. The price is - or was - outrageous for a car will so little utility or functionality (air-con not standard - but at least there is a free radio). Yet people continue to pay up - the ones lampooned in this ad. Recently BMW GB has upped the spec count a little, and dropped the prices. I suspect this is because dealers have been giving discounts of up to 15% on this car, now that the market has hardened a little, which is on the Ford/Citroen scale - and BMW GB wants future retained-value ratios to look better than they are now.

The ad is a joke, and if you take it for what it's worth, it's actually quite funny. I assure you it doesn't warrant a psychoanalysis of the author, other BMW drivers, or of BMW as a company.

I think it's fair to say that most folks would consider a bone-stock, optionless, 116i (as pictured in the add) somewhat ugly. Those who can get passed the small wheels (they look small even when they aren't Photoshoped), and unpainted exterior trim will have a hard time backing up the performance of the 1.6 litre 115bhp motor in a car equipped with the non-sport suspension.

I suspect those who go for the base model 116i won't be that interested in sports suspension :). This car is only likely to sell well in the UK and Ireland, where it will sit in heavy traffic for most of its life. The smart money will go on the 118d, which is externally identical, but has very useful performance.

Well, BMW has to turn a profit too. They want to make more money so, they tap into people that don't earn that much a year. Now Porsche, don't get me started on them, they're the ones that should be blamed for ruining their name with purebred enthusiasts. They ruined their name when they came up with the ludacrous idea of a front wheel drive car. Then they made their name even worse when they slapped a tiptronic in a 911. Sissy cars are what they are now with their traction control and automatics. I yearn for the days of the Carrera RS and 911 Cup cars. Those were real cars. No traction control, no power steering, no autos, just an engine, four wheels, a steering wheel, and a place to sit. Thats what a sports car should be. :soapbox: Anyways, the point is, BMW is doing a good job of maintaining their name so far, as long as they don't screw up and make a tin can like a kia and slap their name on it.

If BMW ran the add (I'm sure they wouldn't) it would probably work, though I'm sure the execs would assess the risk as too high. But the add is funny 'cause it's so true. Many true car lovers (the ones that like to drive, anyway) would take a bimmer over just about anything. And not for the status, but for the engineering, quality, performance and handling. While there are many that buy them for status, for a real aficionado, status is incidental to BMW making truly great cars.

I don't buy the line that the 1-series cheapens the brand. If you want to buy from a car company that is all about image before engineering, buy a Caddy CTS and wash it down with an Escalade. BMW makes great cars. Period. If they choose to make the worlds best premium compacts, all the better. If they can blow away the rest of the segment and sell the car for a price more affordable for an entry-level premium buyer, better still. Cheapening the brand is only a risk if they cut corners in favor of volume - but it appears as though they have squared the corners very nicely and turned out a throroughly satisfying car. I say if every second car is a BMW, the world is a better place. If that bothers owners of larger BMWs, maybe they should have bought a Caddy...

As a very disgruntled owner of a 120i which is falling apart as I drive it (see my post under the cracked windscreen thread) I can tell you, apart from the comments about my chosen career it's no joke at all..........

Well as a very happy driver of a BMW 120 D M Sport.
I can't understand why they are so many 1 series haters even among BMW folks.

It a great drivers car. I've had a couple of 3 series 1 five series and also own a new X5 so I didn't buy it cause it cheap in fact I specced mine to the hilt cost me 33k. It's the looks I like it's wee short bum and it's long snooping nose just ticks all the boxes for me.

And you know where all the 1 series owners post not of this site on another. lol.

I only hate the 1 series because they dont sell it here. Saying that it cheapens the brand only tells me you are new to the brand.

Ever hear of a 2002?

And how much do you think a 2002 cost relative to a Cortina 2-litre, a Pinto, a Vauxhall Victor, Alfa Romeo Giulia...? ;)

The 1er certainly doesn't cheapen the brand as far as list prices go; in many cases it's more expensive than the outgoing E46 3er. It's the poor packaging and piss-poor equipment levels that most Europeans don't like.

This really isn't a BMW fans idea of a giggle.

He is an Audi driver, now don't get me wrong I love Audi and have had an A6 Avant, 3.0 Cab, A3 S-Line, A4 avant and an A2 all since May 2004, but I totally recognise that BMW is a better drivers car, and would have had the 1 series over the A3 if there had been enough room to get my dog in the back. I really can't understand why people who say they like cars feel the need to hate another car, it is beyond me.
