View Full Version : Different Michelins front/back
Bit of a quandary here...was looking at my rear tires yesterday, and the passenger rear is gettin a bit....flat, tread wise. It's not dangerous yet....
I took a bolt in the drivers rear 9 months ago, so it's a bit fresher. The fronts are doing just fine, not even close to needing replacement.
I would like to try out PS2's, but don't want to replace all 4 if it isn't necessary. Besides aesthetic reasons, any real overriding safety issues not to do this? These are the original 19's, and while they get some spirited driving, they don't go to the track.

SEARCH.
Running two different compounds puts you into the realm of tire test driver/engineer. And the combo will react differently to different conditions.
Personally, I wouldn't do it. Get two of the old type or get 4 new tires.
SEARCH.
:)
I did...."different tires" and "different compounds" didn't return anything particularly useful.
Thanks for the advice.

There was a pretty long thread about running different tires front to back, both different tires of the same brand and different brands. It was within the last month or so as I remember, so I'm surprised you couldn't find it. Perhaps a different set of search terms.

If you are running through the rears that fast, a new set should wear out about the same time as your fronts, provided you turn sometimes and don't just haul ass going straight. ;)
Although the search critera may be difficult to nail down, probably 1/2 of the *new tire question* threads talk about running different tires front and rear. Pinecone is giving some sage advice, and it has been backed up by Gary@TireRack.

Thanks for the advice. I remember in the past of couple days seeing several posts on this issue. Those posts did confirm that the posters felt their cars became unstable when runing 2 different sets of tires.
Ok, I did a search using the keywords: tread, rear, front, and this tread (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1229296#post1229296) came up.
I am also a couple of thousand miles from having the rear tires hit the treadwear bars. It looks like I will not be able to get more that 17,000 miles out of the rear tires. I am bummed out because I also want to get the PS2's and did not really want to spend good money on Bridgestone RE040's.

Just buy 4 PS2s. Sell the RE040s with tread left on eBay.
