I've ordered an X3 2.5i, but my friend is looking for a 5 series. He told me ask people's opinions about the 525i's engine. Do you guys think that the car is under powered?

Well, I don't think it is underpowered, but then I have an X5 3.0, and an E46 325. I almost bought an E39 with the last engine, no concerns with the power.

With the new engine in the E60, I think it is fine. I am thinking of the new 530xiT, and would pick the 530T vs the 525T even if the 525T was available, as the wagon plus x-drive could likely use the additional power, but in a sedan, I think the new 525 engine would be fine.

Ultimately, it depends on his preference. Is he used to more power?

I found the 325 with the 2.5 lacking at times, fine most of the time. also would love to hear how the 525 goes.

Drooling at the thought of a 530xi.

You and me both. (530xiT in my case) What would it replace?

Not really. Currently, he has a C240, which is I'm guessing like the 325, and he's happy. He also test drove an '04 325 and liked the power. But on the 5, it has a bigger body with the same engine...that's why I say it might be under powered.

Not any more. 2006 525 has a 3 litre engine with 215 bhp.

The new I6s from BMW in 2006 E60s should be a bit nicer due to the bump up in power.

I've got my 2006 BMW 525i almost 2 weeks ago and I am very happy with its power.
Due to low end max. torque this car feels very fast off the line and I do believe that the 0-60mph numbers given by BMW are very conservative.
I also did not feel any lack of power when passing at highway speeds so overall as I've already stated ,this car has enough power for casual (and even agressive) driving.

I didn't know that. Thought it used a 2.5L engine. So, it's just the horsepower and torque that is different on the two right? Nothing else? Any feature changes that come standard on 530i that don't on 525i?

The 2006 525i has a de-tuned 3 Liter I6 engine in the US and Canada, in Europe its still 2.5 Liter.

I drove an 06 525i and 06 530i back to back, and the both cars feel about the same until you get on the highway. The 530i does feel quite a bit more powerful above 60mph. Around town, its hard to notice any real difference.

Xenons are standard on 530i- also, updated seating options (lumbar adjustment, etc) are standard.

Other than that, I believe they are identical.

Ok, maybe this will show my lack of knowledge about engines, but I just have to ask, is there a way to "re-tune" the engine? If it's the same engine as the 530, what's making it run... (in my opinion... less horsepower per liter = worse), more poorly?

Haven't seen a way to retune the engine yet. I thought there were some differences in the intake system from earlier articles, but the BMW web site doesn't indicate any. If the intake systems do differ, expect to pay outrageous parts prices to upgrade the 525. It isn't likely that it is just a chip.

You don't have to think of the 525 as having a 3.0 running more poorly, you could consider it as running more economically. Don't expect a big difference, but there should be some variation there.

There is another difference between the 525 and 530, and that is the final drive ratio. The lower (numerically higher) ratio on the 525 is likely what is making it feel exactly the same as the 530, as several testers have noted. Of course, that may also erode the (theoretical) fuel consumption advantage.

Thanks, I'm going to start a new thread, see if I can get any bites on the engine retuning...

I drive a 545i , but driving an 06 525i loaner while car in service - i was actually surprised by more power than i expected - 06 power bump helps explain - what i find fun is that auto in manual shift will rev to 7000 rpm before shifting out of first - actually fun to drive a high rev engine !
