I am getting ready to take it for a spin on the autobahn. The i-drive is a bear. I was having trouble getting the radio figured out.

This one is fully loaded with an automatic, sun roof, nav, xenon, everything I think.

$222 for 3 days. Seemed like a good deal.

I already rented an X3 3.0d. Very nice ride. I am now driving the 525d for a comparision. I know I can't get a touring (or a diesel), but this one is very similar to a (US spec'd) gas sedan.

I found the I-drive relatively easy to use but it is difficult to learn it while driving 100 mph+ on the sweet German autobahns!

I did a euro-delivery of my 545i (below) and went there with a buddy and as we traded off driving, the passenger could learn the I-drive. Really, it is set up pretty well. We really liked the constant update of the strongest radio signals!

I keep hearing BMW is going to start bringing diesels over here....

First impressions. Its fast (topped out at 235 kmh), but not quick. Accelerates slowly. The brakes work great (got cut off by a truck while doing 210 dropped to 100 very quickly). The Nav is kewl. I found myself down to 80 kmh a few times because I was watching the screen instead of driving. The sun roof is nice. Do the sedans have the second glass panel behind the main glass too or is it a touring only thing? I really like the tourings ass end. (I don't really like the trunk lines on the sedan, the touring (station wagon) is much cleaner.

The suspension is mushy. I felt it wobble on the turns a few times at 200+ kmh. The X3 I drove was rock solid on turns (rear wheel drive vs the xDrive AWD). I wasn't real comfortable going 200+ kmh.

BTW: I see the 525d is only rated at 177hp@ 4000 rpm vs the 525i at 218@6500 rpm. So I am guessing the non-diesel version of the car is quicker.

It's not AWD vs. RWD. The E60 non-SP has an abominable suspension. I'd MUCH rather drive an X3 than a non-SP E60.

My 545i has the sports package and was rock solid at 240-250 kph (~152 mph). It was easily the best driving car I have ever plopped my butt into but that isn't saying too much. It is definately better than the E39.

Diesels aren't known for quick acceleration...the petrol engines are much better for that. Sedans only have single pieces of glass but I'm sure you can get dual-paned glass to get a whisper quiet interior.

Which is why it's so ironic that the E60 non-SP is so dramatically WORSE than the E39 non-SP. ****ing Lexus drivers.

Interesting...I'll have to try and find an E60 non-SP to try out....

Don't. I was getting car sick in the DRIVER'S seat.

So its just the suspension. I really was not happy with the ride. I was going to turn it in early today. But I guess I'll keep it until friday and give it another chance.

I did see the touring is offered in US specs as the 530xi sport wagon. The extra $10,000 is to much for a wagon for me (yes I see it is a 530 and an AWD, but I just don't want to spend the extra cabage). I am just looking at the minimum (525i premimum, nav, and HUD).

(And yes I love the HUD on my Grand Prix, I am willing to spend the extra $k for it).

BTW: Head to head nonSP diesel to diesel comparo (X3 3.0d vs 525d touring), the X3 is the better BMW.

I'd take the X3 any day over the non-SP E60. But the SP E60 is better than the X3.

Well,

the iDrive died on me. I could no longer push it down, so I could not do anything with it. I took it to the rental agent for a swap and he didn't have another 5er to trade me for so I just turned it in. Had it to drive for 22 hours, spent $99.10 on the 1 day rental and 40 euro on gas.

The iDrive failure was the last straw. I just don't like the 525d. I was 2 hours from home, I couldn't get the nav to work and was just getting into Nurnberg. Luckily I knew how to get on the autobahn and head home, but boy was I pissed. Anyway. It sucked.
