: I went to Germany for the summer and all I got...

I'm spending the summer working in Germany (Frankfurt --I do not recommend it) and decided that I wanted more from the experience than a million air miles and a wicked case of jet lag (I fly back to the US every weekend). I met the e61 at the New York auto show this year and have been obsessing about it ever since. My obsession was fueled by the fact that they are quite prevalent here, mostly in diesel and none so far in AWD.

So my summer assignment in Germany made ED a perfect option as I'd have no additional expense except a train ticket to Munich and stood to save a few grand on the car. I've been monitoring the Bimmerfest board for a few weeks, getting familiar with the BMW mindset, getting comfortable with the car and picking up some negotiating tips for ED (thanks everyone).

Last weekend I finally took a test drive at my local dealer and was really hoping to be disappointed. My current car (Inifniti FX35) was barely 18 months old and I could do without the additional expense right now. Of course, my disappointment was not realized. The 530xit drove like a dream, much more refined than my current ride. I have a concern about ground clearance but we'll worry about that next spring when my dirt driveway turns to mud again.

So then it was time to work the numbers. My local guy started with a pretty good number, only matched by one other in the 10 or so additional quotes I got, but still higher than I was hoping for based on the experience of other EDers from their forum. Then I hit gold with one of my calls, a super quote based on European Invoice as opposed to MSRP. Right where I wanted to be. My local guy matched the number and the order went in yesterday. So far he's suggesting delivery first week of August.

So I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the my first BMW. I'm keeping an eye on the boards here to tide me over until then (I have a few questions which I will post separately). Your enthusiasm is contagious!

 Excellent! What kind of transmission are you going for? How about colors and options? :)

Went for the automatic, too much city driving. Options are Premium (for the auto liftgate, very cool), Sound, Nav, PDC and The Force (i.e., Active Cruise Control). It was a tough call between Orient Blue and Back Sapphire but I decided that a black wagon looked too much like a hearse so went for the less austere OB.
