I ordered a 2005 545i last week in Florida to be built in Germany. Does anyone know when I can expect the car in Florida? How many weeks on average does the process take from order to factory to built car to shipping back here?
A day after I gave the salesman the order, he told me that it was "in the system."
Thank you.

I think they can build the car in 1 week...figure 4 weeks to the East Coast for shipping and such.

I'd say earliest is 4 weeks...latest is 6 weeks.

Thanks. Probably more like 8-10 weeks. Called the salesman today and he told me it will be built around July 20th. Sounds like late August for delivery here in Florida.
I guess I will just have to wait for my titanium silver, gray comfort-seated tiptronic 545i.

Installing the Porsche transmission will definitely extend the build time.

It looks like they are pretty backed up at the factory with everyone trying to get one of the last 545i's due to BMW's firesale leases on this vehicle.

Well, ordered mine 4/21. Went to production start staus 150 5/18, actual build status 151 on 5/31, production completed status 155 on 6/3. She's now somewhere in Mid Atlantic aboard the Sagitarrius Leader with anticpated arrival in Port Hueneme on 7/9. With any luck she should be in my San Diego garage by 7/14. Soooooooooooo...total elapsed order to delivery time will be just short of 90 days. The wait SUCKS!!!i

I'm going to get a short 5-day "teaser" next week, then another 30-60 day wait! It'll be that much sweeter when I get it back on redelivery!

Unfortunately, 90 days is probably about right. 30 days from my order date June 20th to the build date July 20th. That is slow.

I would say that it would depend on the schedule of the production # that they used to get your car built. Also are you aware that the 550i will be coming this October? Wm

According to my salesman, the car is scheduled to be built around July 15-20.
I figure I should get it by the end of August, beginning of September.
I guess I will just have to wait. :dunno:

Well my dealer was wrong, thank goodness! He told me the car will be built in mid July and I would have it by the end of August to the beginning of September. Nope! The car has already been built and is awaiting transport to the States. I should have it by the end of July at the latest which would be a total of 6 weeks max.
I ordered it on June 17th.
They are building the 545i's pretty quickly. They must want to re-tool the factory pretty soon for the new 550's. Mine might be one of the last 545's built.
I'll be spending my days at the docks looking out for my new 545i. :eeps:

I ordered my 545i on June 25. I got a call yesterday from the dealer saying that they'd stopped production on the 545i, and that my car would be a 550i. He said that there IF there was a price change, it would be minimal, but that there usually isn't. He'd let me know.

He said that my order hadn't actually been placed yet because his manager was on vacation, blah, blah, blah... and that it would be built in September.

Basically, I'm VERY happy about getting a 550i instead of a 545i :bigpimp: , but what I wanted to know is if he held my order, knowing that there would be a price increase in a couple of weeks. Has anyone here ordered on or after 7/25 and gotten a confirmed production date?

TIA,
Art

You are definitely being jerked around. If you are purchasing the 550, expect to pay significantly more because the engine is bigger. BMW's prices usually increase quite a bit with more horse-power. The dealer should have told you that.

If you are leasing, the money factor on the 545i was .0010(2.4%). Look for the money factor on the 550 to be at least .00195(4.68%) which the dealers can AND WILL mark up to .00235(5.64%), especially on a new vehicle.
I ordered my 545i on June 16th, with the base money factor of .0010%, and according to OC, it is on a ship bound for the states.
I will be speaking to my dealer tomorrow for a more accurate time-frame regarding expected delivery.

Sounds like the dealer screwed you good. I would have cancelled the 550 since it was not what you ordered and attempted to make a better deal on a 545i sitting on the dealer's lot for substantially less cash. :thumbdwn:

I've got no problem paying more (I'm buying, not leasing) - I've just got an issue with the principle. If I determine that my order was held in the interest of getting a few more bucks, I'll just pull the order from him and order the 550 from someone else. If he had told me up front "hey, if you wait a couple of weeks, I can get you a 550" - I would have been happy to wait. As it is, I've waited 10 years, so what's 2 more weeks. :-)

From what I understand, they're not shutting down production of the 545 until the end of July. Is that correct? Can anyone confirm or refute this? If so, he's toast.

I just spoke to my dealer. Do I have news for you! He told me "sometime in August" will be the end of production for the 545i. BMW didn't even send him an announcement yet for the end of production of the 545i and the start of production of the 550.
Sounds like the dealer you are involved with has cooked up a scheme to make more profit for himself by selling you a new 550 instead of an "old" 545i.
I would RUN! :thumbdwn:

I just spoke to another local dealer, and he says that he has 1 more 545 that he can order, but its going into production soon, so I have to act fast. He thinks that the increase for the 550 is likely to be in the realm of $600 or so (dunnno. don't care.) Essentially, he said that my dealer had used up the allotment of 545's they could order.
I've left a message for my dealer's sales manager - essentially, if they can't guarantee in writing that I get a 550 for a 545 price, I'll go order a 550 from someone else.

Done. The sales manager basically said "tough s**t", so I took my deposit back and called another dealer. This dealer actually had a configurable 545 going into production very soon, but I couldn't resist. Apparently, I'm first in line for an '06 550i. In all likelihood, it'll be November before I see the car - I can be very patient when I have to.

Thanks for all the input!

Yes. My 545i is sailing the ocean blue and should be ready for pick-up on or around July 28th. Looks like a 6 week process. I ordered it June 16th.
Thanks for asking, me530.

Do you know what boat you are on? I'm on the Maersk Tide, scheduled to be in port June 20th....the wait is killing me!

07-17-2005, 08:51 AM
No. But it is scheduled to arrive in port around the 18th to the 20th so it could be on the same ship.
Did you find out the ship's name from the dealer?

Yeah, but It may have been something to do with the European Delivery program, my dealer got an e-mail letter with my boat information and forwarded it to me, and a few days later it arrived at my house in the snail mail. If you're interested, check out my post in the ED forum, lots of good pictures! :)

Wow! Looks like you had a great time! Next time I have to do the ED. Looks like great fun!
According to what I just read on the ED forum, BMW should snail mail me a letter telling me what ship my car is on. But as you say, that's probably just a convenience for the ED folks. I probably won't know.
In Florida, we almost have a mini-autobahn situation. If you are going 80 in the right lane of the interstate, count on having company 2 feet behind your rear bumper.
That's why I went with the 545i. The inline 6 doesn't cut it out here. It's simply survival of the fittest.
And I plan on doing more than just surviving!

Someone i know once referred to his minivan as "Hey it'll do 80 mph right?"

But with the 545i once you floor it at 80mph you'll be over 100mph passing the tailgaters quite effortlessly.

Yeah man, show the haters who really owns the road!

On a side note with the clock ticking down, i wonder how many 545i's will be produced for the US total and what day the last batch of 545i's will be built, 7-30-05?

BMW should've had the 4.8 V8 in the E60 from the get-go! :wahwah: Ahhh...The thrill of the hunt!!! :drive:

The 545i will be produced into August. My dealer didn't get a notice yet from BMW telling him when to stop taking orders on the 545i.

I talked to my dealer today, and he told me that he'd heard that the first run of the 550i would not be available in a 6-speed manual (an essential element for me). He had not been able to confirm this rumor. He did say that the computer would let him build one, so he's not quite sure. He'll know more when they get their September allotment.

FYI - if this is true, the 550 will carry a $1600 increase over the 545. Note that the link in the table includes destination charges: http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/07/23/138190.html

Talked to my dealer today, and he got the allotment of September 550's.

Dealer confirmed for me that 6-speed manual will NOT be available in the September builds of the 550. I guess they get to hold my deposit for another month. (sigh....)

At least one individual over on the E60 forums confirms the 6-speed availability. There are also rumors of M Sport package and the elimination of the SMG option. http://forums.e60.net/lofiversion/index.php/t13479.html
