I just had a new 2005 Bluetooth-enabled TCU (964 114) installed in my 2004 vert. The dealer wants $500 to give me back my old TCU. They say it is per BMW procedure. I paid $900 for the new one. What gives?

Is ths screwage or what?

I have not seen anybody so far at any forum paying for some kind of "core charge" when swapping TCUs, much less paying to get their old TCU back. Not even in the TSB that state the swap:

For E46/E83/E85/E53 vehicles produced between 3/2004 and 8/2004, are equipped with a TCU that does not support Bluetooth®. On these vehicles the TCU can be replaced at the customer's expense with a 2005 MY TCU. Cradles may not be added to these vehicles because of wiring incompatibility.

You already paid $750.00 for your 2004 TCU when you bought your car and the -114 TCU is actually $550.00 plus programming and installation (some $150.00)... if this is not major screwage I do not know what it is. Sorry...

Since this is not a warrantee repair, the repair facility (dealer) is REQUIRED BY LAW to give you back any replaced parts at your request.

Resolved!

Pickup up my car with the old 2004 TCU in a box. After demanding to see this "$500 core charge" in writing, turns out there is a TCU/Assist swap form that must be faxed to BMW by the stealer to ensure the new TCU is associated with your VIN (makes sense).

Their is mention of a $500 core charge on the form IF the paperwork is not submitted to BMW (again, makes sense to encourage completion of the form). The stealer claims he "misread" the form and thought the core charge applied period. Yeah........sure!

Anyway, walked out of there with voice activated bluetooth up and running in my '04 vert. My Sprint/Treo 650 (firmware 1.12) paired up and transferred the phonebook right away. Made a few calls on the way home and was told it sounded great.

Let me know if you have questions about the setup.
