Edit: After about 15k miles, it gets quite noisy, especially at low speed. Slight tramlining also began to exist. At 24k miles, it has about 10% tread left at my rears. And yes, wet traction is also phenomenal.

A couple of months ago, I replaced the original Bridgestone RE040 tires of my ZHP with the Toyo T1-S for $680, a very decent price for a set of 18” tire. It has 4200 miles now, and this review is to compare it with the RE040 under the same road conditions and mileage. Wet condition is unknown. It has not been raining in Southern California since I had it.

Appearance
The T1-S has a V-shape tread pattern and a treadwear of 280, similar to the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, and is directional. It is a round shouldered tire and it does not look as wide as the square shouldered ones such as the RE040’s, Pilot Sports, or the Yokos. The 255 looks like a 245 from the back. The rim protector is pretty much useless as it extends very little out from the rim. The RE040 has a much better rim protector. Despite, it is an attractive looking tire.

Ride Quality
The T1-S is extremely sensitive to air pressure. I first had it at 38 psi all around and the ride was quite bumpy, and the front end felt a bit light. Then I lowered it to 36 psi all around and it improved significantly. Ride quality is extremely comfortable. The RE040 is no slouch in this area but the T1-S is just unbelievable. Going over the same rough pavement and the difference is very obvious. I have never had this kind of ride comfort in a low-profile performance tire, period.

Noise
The T1-S is not noisy by my standard, but not quiet either. It is noticeably louder than the RE040. I hear a slight constant whirling sound, regardless of speed, that was not present with the RE040. With the noise, there is also a hint of high frequency vibration sending into the cabin. You can definitely feel all four tires touching the road. On the other hand, it does not squeal no matter how hard you turn.

Performance/Handling
One of the biggest improvements I have is the absence of tramlining. Going through the same road that I used to fight with the RE040’s, the T1-S does not exhibit any kind of tramlining at all. Now I can even take my hands off the steering wheel and it still goes in a straight line.

Dry traction is at least equal, if not better than the RE040. Compare to the Bridgestone, it feels more confident and easier negotiating a turn. I have not taken it to its limit yet, but it seems to have much higher grip than the road allows for regular driving. I have done very fast turns on some mountain roads and it just handled with no complaints.

Turn-in is quicker and it feels less understeer than the RE040. Bringing the rear pressure back to 38 psi resulted in a more neutral handling, but with the expense of ride comfort. Even though it weighs less than most of its competitors, I did not feel any noticeable difference in acceleration compared to the RE040.

Overall, the Toyo T1-S performs extremely well in almost every category except noise. Though it is not the best in quietness, it makes up, as a bonus, with an ultra comfortable ride quality. And I highly recommend it to those who are especially concerned about the harsh ride of the ZHP.

Good write up, thanks. I guess my search skills are deficient. I am looking at a similar price for the set. My biggest concern is with cornering. I rarely exceed 90 mph, so I am not too concerned with that. I am hearing that the tire is quite grippy and that I should be happy with it. Sounds like you have found your comfort zone with the psi in both front and rear. It would be awhile before I encounter rain, but I hate wet roads. Nevertheless, I hear the tire performs very well under such conditions.

Here are some interesting reviews http://www.epinions.com/Toyo_Proxes_T1_Passenger_Performance_Tire/display_~reviews But none of them seem to be made by BMW owners. You get the full gamut of opinions here. :thumbdwn:

I've had these for over 10K miles. Great handling, especially in the rain, good braking, nice at speed. Side walls are kinda soft, though, IMO. Wear seems average. I'll probably try something different next time. Also, I'm kinda tired of seeing the directional tread pattern - starting to annoy me...

I am running them too and happy so far but not that many miles so far. I think the T1-R are available now, which are sort of update of the T1-S. You might want to check those out.

Ok, I got the tires ordered and will put them on tomorrow. $719 for the set out the door. Includes all incidentals. My dealer didn't have the T1-R, but I didn't even have a chance to inquire about it. I'll try the T1-S, see how that goes, and report back here from time to time. Thanks for the comments.

The two tires are spec'd pretty close. I am curoious to see how this plays out on the road.

Ok, the new tires are on. Only 22 miles in them, but I did hit a couple of twisties. Not too hard, but conditions were 67 and somewhat overcast, but dry pavement. Don't worry, this won't be a daily saga on the tires. Don't want to bore anyone here. But I do think I am off to a good start. Tires were very quiet in the turns and held the pavement quite well. I'll update later, but may go onto the dedicated T1-S thread that is already in existence.

i really love my t1-s. traction and handling is just awesome. not to mention it's also one of the lightest tires out there. my next tires would be the t1-r's though just because it improves on the areas where the t1-s is deficient at.

Just put a set of T1 - R's all around after ruining 2 tires in a pothole
Dry and wet handling much imporved over roiginal Conti's
Only gripe is somewhat increased noise at 20-40 mph

That's a good price. I will inquire on my next set.

So this is the 5000 mile update.

Took it in for a rotation this a.m. I rotated at 1000 mile intervals x 3, then I switched to 2000 miles for my own convenience. Mistake? I don't know. I'll do the next rotation at 2000 to keep the tread-wear even and then back to 1000 miles or even 500, ridiculous?

The reason I ask is because after 5000 miles I am at 65% tread remaining. Surprising? Probably not. I engage in spirited driving from time to time like all of you here, but I don't track the car and I am not a wild-man on the road. I do get out on 2-lane highways often, some of which have sharp curves, many of which do not. I do find myself making legal passes quite often, but that's in the straight. If it is raining, I am obviously more relaxed on the gas and turns.

We'll see how much actual life I get out of these tires. I am thinking I might get 12,000 the way I am going. Might.

Toyo T1R's are awsome. Comparable to Michelin Pilot sports #'s. Awsome wet traction. Great ride quality, and quieter also!

Initially i had vibration felt in the front end after the tires were put on. Back to the tire dealer twice, rebalanced twice, then to the dealer who said the rims were " slightly bent"
After about 5 000 miles, all vibration went away
Strange:dunno:

I bought some TOYO Proxes 4 & I hated them. The car weaved side to side on the highway. So I called the place I bought them & asked if I could exchange them for some Kumho ASX. They said no problem. The Kumho ASX's are defiantly a better tire & the tread life is twice as long. IMO.

i'm pretty sure proxes 4 all seasons are very different from the t1-r/t1-s. one is an all out performance summer tire and the other is a compromise. much like comparing ps2's to mxv's
