:dunno:
I've tried searching for this, but could not find a solution ...
I have the Basic X3 sound system, dealer-installed CD changer, Sirius satellite, and dealer-installed AUX jack in the glove compartment.
What is the best way to hook up my 3rd gen IPod?
1. Is there a connecting cord for the Ipod that supplies constant line output out of the bottom connector on the Ipod, instead of using the headphone jack?
2. Is there any solution available that would allow me to charge the Ipod from the flashlight socket in the glove compartment while I am playing it?
Again, I'm sorry if this has been covered before, and I would appreciate either a link or any help anyone can offer.
Thanks!
Tom

From what I understand, there are two types of connectors you can get from BMW - the auxiliary connector which allows you to play any device with audio out (e.g. headphone jack) through your stereo (generic mp3 player, tape player, etc.) and the iPod-specific adapter which costs a bit more but provides power to the iPod and displays the song names, etc. on the stereo display. The iPod adapter also allows you to control the iPod via the stereo controls. The only problem with this system is you need a genuine iPod or iPod mini - other mp3 players will not work with this setup, nor will the iPod shuffle.

The BMW iPod adapter does not display song names, etc... on the stereo display. Buy you are correct that it lets you control the iPod via the steering wheel controls. If I had to do it all over again, I would not go with the BMW adapter. But, it does it's job, I just want more!

Huh, guess the salesman who told me it did was wrong. Good thing I just opted for the Aux adapter.

ChiefCrazyTalk: I got the AUX connector myself instead of the BMW Ipod adapter because the BMW adapter was incompatible with my Sirius radio installation.
simoncpw: The Belkin cord looks good, but I was hoping to be able to charge the Ipod from the FLASHLIGHT SOCKET in the glove compartment.
Daniel B: The Icelink is not compatible with either the Sirius radio or the CD changer. To install it, you have to disconnect both of the former.
... still looking for a solution ....

There is an auxilliary power adapter that plugs into the flashlight socket in the glove box and has a cigarette lighter type female connector on the end. I saw it on the Pacific BMW parts website for $5.89, part # 82 11 0 004 073. That, and a Belkin or other adapter for the iPod will get you glove box power to your iPod if you use the AUX input cable.
Personally, I went with the Dension ice>link Plus, but as someone said, it is in lieu of, not in addition to, the factory CD player. It will coexist with the Sirius option. Check with Dension for more information.

RickR: Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, Pacific BMW wants to charge me $17 UPS shipping for a $5.89 part!
Unless I can find something else to order, I find this too steep to justify :tsk:
In that case, just drive down to your local BMW dealer and order the cigarette/flashlight adapter. It's probably not as cheap as Pacific BMW's discounted $5.89 price, but it should not cost more than Pacific BMW's shipped price of $22.89 ($17 + $5.89). :dunno:
