Hi,

We plan to take delivery on Friday Aug 5th and originally, we were going to go south to Italy. But, being our 2nd ED, we're feeling bad on skipping out again on visiting Prague. So, we're entertaining a weekend trip to that city. Problem is the stories I've heard about Bimmers being stolen in the Czech Republic. We have 3 options we're considering: 1) take overnight trains back&forth to Prague, 2) rent a car, if allowed, 3) drive our car.

So, for options 1&2 we have to figure on what to do about our Bimmer. Suboptions: a) postpone our delivery to the following Monday; b) pickup as currently scheduled and leave the car at the delivery center (is that possible?) or leave it near the train station (is that safe?) or some other safer location.

For option 3, does anyone know of hotels that have secure self-parking. We need a hotel for two adults and two kids.

Thanks in advance,
LAN

Elsewhere on the forum, members have said that it is allowed and relatively safe to drive your ED car to Prague.

We are planning on going there in our 325 in a couple of days, and I was planning on leaving it in a secure garage for the entire time we are in Prague.

Good Luck!

DerGolfspieler,

Thanks for the comments. I found buried down inside the forum a thread on Prague. I'm encouraged by what I've read. Please let me know what hotel and parking you used. I've got two kids and my wife travelling with me, so I'll need an appropriate hotel for them. I'm trying to lock in my plans in the next week. My dates for Prague are the weekend of 5 Aug!

Enjoy, LAN

I just came went to Prague two weeks ago with my wife and two kids, ages 5 and 2. The Andel's hotel in the business district is outside of the Old Town area. You go in through Pilsen, can park your car in the underground garage and leave it there for the duration of your stay, and do not have to drive to any of the Old Town old streets. This area is being developed and there is nothing to see, but either a 10-15 minute walk or getting on their very reliable and quick transportation system will get you to the sights very quickly. For 230 euros a night, I had a two bedroom suite with 20' or so ceilings in the living room, two king beds, one in each room, two full baths, a small kitchen with a fridge, AC, electric shades, free internet in the lobby, two 40" approx plasma TV's, one in a room and another in the living room, and the hotel was very very nice. It is a boutique small hotel and the suite I stayed was in the new wing they have. I shopped around and by far this was the best deal I could get. If you stay in the Old Town, you will have to drive through some small streets and will have to pay a premium for this location. This was my best stay and if you are traveling with two kids, I highly recommend Andel's. Also, the breakfast was the best during my trip and their service impecable. Their standard is way above German hotels. Here is their website. http://www.andelshotel.com/ (http://) . Also, do not change your plans to go to Prague...it is an amazing city beyond anyone's expectations. Let me know if this works out.

And I have to say, it did not dissappoint me in the slightest. It has kept all the good things about it that I first saw in 1990 and has added a bunch more.

I found driving and navigating in Prague to be hassle-free, with similar level of courtesy from other drivers as in Germany. We stayed at Pension Lida as per a recommendation from one of Rick Steves' books and it went beyond my expectations. For 55 Euro per night, we got a big double room (big beds that we elected to share with our 2 year old), full contemporary bath, a great breakfast, cable TV, free Internet and a great can-do attitude from our host, Jiri. Best of all, the villa is located in a great neighborhood (10-15min away from Old Town), and most rooms face a tree - and bird - filled courtyard.

As far as the car goes, we elected to park in a secure underground location (6 euro per day) and we went by tram in our daily explorations.

We did not regret our visit to Prague one bit - most likely we'll go back at some point.

Hope this helps - if you have any specific questions please let me know.
