88 325is with no self diagnostics from the computer, engine light is ON

My 88 325 has the engine light on but I can't get the codes to blink up on the engine light, it has Motronic 1.1, which is supposed to start blinking codes after the key is turned on and the accellerator is depressed fully and released five times, but I get nothing. Anyone else ever encounter this?? Is my computer crapped out?? This is really frustrating, and if I buy one of those $150 diagnostic tools from Peake am I going to get the same thing?? HELP!! :dunno:

it's all in the rhythm, try a few more times at different speeds and make sure to go to full throttle..

turning key to full off at begining of every try.
1444 code would be a good sign :)

If you're a member, many local BMW CCA chapters have a toolbox you can borrow tools, like the Peake code reader. If not, maybe you could post on the Virginia regional forum here and ask if anyone can loan you one for a day...
