They did a great job last year. It was one of the best I have attended so far. It was not focused on just on of their cars but their entire line up. They brought sample of their competion for every one of their cars.
Edit: Also signed up for Sat 15th at 9:00 AM.

Oh well, it will be cool to be one of the first to drive hte new IS!Yesterday it was announced that all temporary residents will have left Reliant Park next week. At the same time officials said this has nothing to do with the Texan having their first game of the season in Reliant Stadium on September 18. Really, I am sure these people would love to sell us waterfront property in New Orleans.
I am beginning to think that Mazda may have jumped the gun.

have to say, it really sucked. but, i survived. :p
at the end of the three days, i needed to get out. i guess three nights with little or no sleep and being stuck in one place does get to you after all.

I went to the one in Miami Today (10/1/05), it was very nice but much smaller than the one last year. They featured the entire lineup of Lexus Cars, including the new IS250 and IS350 and the RX400h, they only had 3 competing cars: a 330i, a 530i, and a MB E500.
They scaled back on the cars and the size of the courses (3 all performance) but did very well on the entire experience, I have to say much better than the BMW and Mercedes shows, I guess they have to, if the cars are not as good. It was a really fun couple of hours, we were there early in the morning so we avoided a lot of the lines, eventhough we had a brief rain delay, enough time for a quick bite and then back to the lines for more fun with the cars.
I absolutely recommend it...

If you went the year before, be prepared to be bitterly disappointed. My advice: Go in expecting it to suck big time. Then you might enjoy yourself.
If you have never gone before, you should have a blast.

It will probably be easier If we post the picture of us and you can pick us out. :D There will be 5 attending from Austin. From left to right: Afshwant, icemanjs4, JetBlack330i (will not be in attendance), xspeeedy (+ his wife will attend), and LDV330i. I also spoke with TLudwig earlier tonight. He will not be in attendance at the Lexus event but would like to join us for lunch.

If you have never gone before, you should have a blast.I attended last year and it was great. They even had a nice eating place for free and wonderful food. I have been reading the reports for this year so my expectations have been lowered. That is why this year we will be eating somewhere else. :D

we should just make a meeting place for all of us to meet at around noon, 1pm.We all should be checking in at 10:00 AM. Normally there are display/show areas beyond the registration desks. Maybe we should all introduce ourselves there before we all head out in 10 different directions (They will have a course for each car line that Lexus sells). There we can plan the rest of the day out and then we can disperse.

OK guys, how was it? The event and the get together. :dunno:
LDV330i
10-15-2005, 09:31 PM
This was probably the longest BF get together. It lasted 11 hours.
Our original plans was to meet at the the Lexus event at 10 AM. Icemanjs4, Afshawnt, Mr. and Mrs, xspeedy, and myself were there but MIA was wheel-man. Recalling wheel-man's real name and other details he had previously posted we were able to pick him out of the crowd while we waited to try one of the new IS350. :D I saw TAMUM3's car in parking lot but were never able to identify him in the crowds.
We were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to cancel lunch and just munch of the excellent canapés. Therefore, TLudwig was not able to join us. After testing the IS250 and IS350 vs. the BMW 330i we decided to go to the SUV track where we tested the Lexus GX470. The went to the GS track where we tested the GS300 and GS430. We then spent the rest of afternoon going back and forth between the different tracks, making them are our own privately timed events. :D We also rode as passengers as others drove giving tips on how to improve our driving. We also took video of our driving and hopefully that will be posted on BF tomorrow.
Our preferred car was the BMW 530i specially after we started driving it with the DSC partially turned off. ;) That made driving even more fun. We closed down the track at 6 PM and were one of last people to leave.
We all were disappointed how the MB E500 and SC 400 handled. The GS300 AWD though a little underpowered handled well. The GS430 was nice but it still felt like a big car. Though the IS250 was quick, it did not feel that way after driving the IS350 which was a very fast car. As good as Lexus have been improved they feel felt they were 1 step behind BMW in overall performance. Many people there seem to get the same impression after testing the cars and we lost no time in preaching the (BMW) Word while we waited in line. :bigpimp:
We then went to an Indian restaurant. Don't ask what I ate, all I know it was good. We hang out there until 9 PM when it was time for the Austin gang to head home, exhausted but happy to have made the trek to Houston.

I'm heading out to the event right now.
I'm back from the Taste of Luxury. Overall I liked it. OK, they didn't have the gourmet cook there this year, but it didn't matter to me. The appetizers were good. Lexus knows how to cater to its potential customers. Now, the only car that I was really interested was the new IS 350. It is a major improvement from the first generation, which was designed for the well off ricer crowds. With 300 hp it is a head to head competitor of the 330i. In fact I like the dash layout, with the flourescent dials is well done, much better than the sparced 330i. Lexus was able package all the electonics onto one touch screen display without using a double hump for the NAV system on the dash and without requiring the use of the i-Drive in the 330i. I did not get a chance to compare against the 330i today, but I think the IS handles as well if not better than the BMW. I was unable to make the IS 350 slide around the short and sharp course. It just glued to the asphalt with confidence. As for the rest of the Lexus line, humba. Yes, the big LS 430 and GS 430 were nice if you like the truck like steering ratios. And, the SC430 is definitely not my kind of car.
The stealer of the day, we were able to switch the exchange student's wrist band from right to left which entitles hime to drive:yikes: He is bold so, he took the liberty of driving most of the cars including the E400 and the 530i witout a learners' permit. :D That's him in the SC 430 and GS 430

I have to say that I really enjoyed the event on Saturday. As LDV330i mentioned, we were there from 10AM to 6PM, and used every minute of the day. I did enjoy driving the new IS250/350, especially teh 350. It handled quite well, and it did stick to the road. The 250 was a little underpowered, but we did drive the 350 first. The 0-60 of the 350 was very impressive - even though it only comes as an auto-transmission.
However, while the steering was accurate, we all felt the overall feel of the car was a bit soft. I'm not sure if it's the looser steering, or the cushier seats, but all of us felt much more confident with the 330i. There is something about the BMW that Lexus has still failed to capture - a solidity... the weight of the wheel, the confidence, etc. That said, of course, the BMW was not as fast in the straightaways as the Lexus - it definitely can outrun the BMW in a straight line.
We all found it rather amusing that they decided to do a head-to-head comparison demo of the 330i and the IS350. They had the two cars to a drag race, make a hairpin turn at the end, and come back. Of course the road was no wider than two cars, so passing during the turn was impossible. Naturally the Lexus won - as it entered the turn first. What we found rather amusing was that the race looked fixed. Coming off of the turn, the Bimmer hardly accelerated at all - almost as if the guy was feathering the pedal for the first 300 feet or so. They made it such that the lexus not only won - but won by several seconds - highly unrealistic. Also the demo course was designed to be straight-line intensive, and not filled with twists and turns. Oh well it was a Lexus event.
On the flip side, we were out there singing the praises of BMW as loud as we could, and attracted several other people into conversations. Also - the line for the 330i was always the longest as everyone wanted to drive it.
If anyone wants the whole collection of pics/videos, PM me and I'll email you a link.

I saw the IS 350 beat the 330i, but when they did the same test with the Cad vs RX 400h, I thought it was fixed, such that they agreed to let the Lexus accelerate first, then the Cad. Anyway, the IS 350 is a fine car. If I wasn't partial to BMWs I would buy it. I see a lot of buyers in that segment buying the IS over the 330i.

I'll agree with you that the Lexus if a very nice car. Many people will like the interior far more than the BMW as well. I think Lexus will give the 3 series a run for its money. If you're after handling, the BMW wins out - but for the average consumer - it will be a tough choice.
Also - the line for the 330i was always the longest as everyone wanted to drive it.

Well, there was only one 330i to drive, after all ;) .
I agree that the 330i was noticeably better suited to track work, despite the IS350's significantly better acceleration. The steering on that 330i was a bit strange, though. . .I think it had the active steering.
I really enjoyed getting behind the wheel of the RX400h, too. That was the first time I've driven a hybrid, and it seems like Lexus is really taking the lead in making the technology more user-friendly (and actually able to merge on the freeway).
Overall, it was a great event  .

I came away very impressed with the new IS350. Much improvement over the previous model. Lexus certainly knows how to do a nice interior, the E90 feels cold and cheap in comparison.
I would consider buying one if it had a 6spd in it, as the paddle shifts were way too slow. Hopefully Lexus puts out a manual and a coupe very soon. :D
Anyone else think that the 5-series looks very dated already? That car is not aging well at all.
BTW, does anybody know what the small letter(s) in the bottom right of the printed name tag means :dunno: ? I had a "BK" on mine and my girlfriend had an "R". . .

I thought it indicates the color of the neck strap (black vs red). I figured the strap was based on what car you had an interest in (specified in the registration form).

Yeah, the letters seemed to indicate the color of the strap they needed to attach. But we couldn't figure out what the color meant. I originally asked the lady at the counter, and she said the color was based on what your preference for cars was - so they could tailor their attention to your preferences.
Oddly, I think all of us chose the IS350 as our preference, but I got a different color from the others.

Interesting reports. I'd be hard-pressed to consider the 350 simply because a BMW ED lease is usually a much better deal, and because there's no stick. Otherwise, it'd be more of a contender.

Now that y'all have the itch you need to do the real thing, a High Speed Driving Course. The Houston Chapter of BMWCCA (http://www.houston-bmwcca.com/)is sponsoring one next at Texas Motor Speedway. I did it last spring and it was blast. Thinking about doing it again next month.

It was great to meet everyone. Sorry I was late... my sig other needed time to get ready and I was a little lost finding where the event actually was in the Reliant complex. Had a good time in general, but wish I spent more time with y'all. Not as good as past years.
And of course the bimmers were the winners in all the comparos.

Why were you thinking the Lexus track as driving fast? That's not fast track. I'm thinking about heading out to the boon dog early Sunday morning. The thrill of driving is Angeles Crest Hwy, Malibu Canyon, Ortega Hwy in SoCa. These are roads I need to horn my skills, they are not race tracks. I think there are a lot of fun roads to drive without making weekend commitments.
