Any input on this from people who owed 6er's for more then half an year or did around 25k miles with them? I heard this is the most common part to fail on it. A friend changed around 3 in 40k KM's (around 30k miles i think) and at 1400EUR a piece it's not really nice.

Mine ws repalced in February 2005 when the car was less than a year old. It had around 12K miles, and was under warranty. That has been the only problem I have ever had, knock wood, and I just turned 22K yesterday

What were the symptoms? I got about 11k right now, I'll get to 22k in about a year. You're making me nervous. :)
If this is a common occurrence with a 6, then yeah, -like the other poster is worried about, and I am too now- this is a serious quality issue with the 6.

I kept getting warnings of active steering failure which the dealer could not replicate, of course. I would get them maybe twice a week, usually after starting the car when the wheels had been turned instead of being pointed straight ahead. The warning would come within a block or so of starting up. If I pulled over and turned the ignition off, and restarted it a minute or so later it would go away. When I took the car in for an oil change it happened to the Service Tech when they pulled it out of the bay. They kept the car for a week and when I came back they told me they had to replace the steering rack. Have not had a problem since then.
This would be a reliability problem with the caronly if there was a massive recall for the problem and if BMW did nothing. However they fixed it, gave me an X-3 for a week I have no problem with them at all.
