View Full Version : Honda (and Ford) 5W-20 motor oil
Those of you with Hondas, where are you buying 5W-20 oil? What brands?
Local parts places have only 2 brands of 5W-20 in stock: Castrol GTX for $2.50 quart and Royal Purple for $5.99 quart. I'd prefer to use Mobil1 if I had my choice, and Mobil does make a 5W-20, but no one stocks it.

I'd like to know too:eek:

There are a few threads in the archives about this, but the best one was 8 months ago and maybe there is new knowledge. Maybe.
Right now I suspect Castrol GTX in 5W-20 at $2.50/qt is the way to go. Available in cases of 12 for less. Change every 5000 miles and no problem.

Thanks. I did a quick check at my local Costco but none to be found. I have no reluctance to use Castrol GTX.

Mazda RX-8 rotary too
I use Castrol GTX in it, you can get it pretty much anywhere, Walmart, auto parts stores, etc, but it's not synthetic, there's some controversy on whether or not to use synthetic oil in a rotary engine since it has oil injection for the rotor seals

I've always used Mobil One 0w-20, it says right on the box that it meets Ford and Honda req's. I ccould always find it at the local Farm and Fleet.
Works great

Use of 5W-20 is to help meet CAFE rules, I would run a 5W-30 os so if it were MY engine.

Sorry, I just don't like the idea of hot 20 weight oil.

Exactly...Honda is ALL about fuel milage and emmision technology. Lighter oil has less resistance....better fuel economy. On the other hand, I would bet large sums of cash that Honda has done a complete durability test on it's engines using that oil. :dunno:

Funny that this 20 weight recommendation is for US market only and everywhere else it's no less than 30. I guess it works for trips to work or the supermarket and I'm sure it's fine for "high speed" cruising at 70 mph  .
Come on Mr. Engineer, would you still use it for your trips on the autobahn at 110+ or take it to the Ring?

I don't drive American spec cars on the Autobahn...they scare me. :eeps:
Honda engine in general are very good and have very good tolerances....that being said, I would think 5W20 would be OK. We also tend to throw away cars pretty quickly in the US, so long life is not such an issue.

Bump:)
Picked up some Pennzoil 5-20w at Walmart yesterdat @1.99/qt. I was not going to put Mobil 1 in the Element, I'll change the oil too often to get the benefit. Odd thing was buying it by the qt was cheaper than the 5qt jug:confused:

Antique thread...but I'll add that Pennzoil recently (?) came out with a full synthetic 5W/20 oil, "Platinum", that I read about on the Cobra forums.
I picked some up at the local Walmart zuper zentrum and it is slightly less $ than Mobil 1.

The Ranger specs "semi syn". The only guys that had it in 5W-20 that I found... was castrol at Manny Moe and Jack.
I dont wanna void the warranty. I have a clear vision of Ford stamping "VOID" on any future claims if the wrong oil was used....

And since when did 5W30 conventional oils stay in grade?
Almost all of the 5W30 conventional oil drivers have been using for years thinned down to a 20wt within 2-3K, so they were running on a 5W20 without even knowing it.

If your interested in trying this oil out, as I am, for my girls Honda, since its the correct weight, you cant beat this deal, FREE OIL and Filter (Purolator Prem. Plus oil filter )
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=39666&t=200086
The rebates took me all of 5 minutes and using my companies stamp machine I actually made 67 cents on the deal, 6 quarts + Filter. If you use your work address and maybe another address along with your home address you can get enough for a good year or more...
They also have Megs Wheel Cleaner, buy one get one free, I was always an Eagle one AZ wheel cleaner user but the new formulation just seems to not cut it anymore. The Megs has really impressed me with the nasty winter wheels it really does a great job.
Gotta love Slickdeals.net
4 free Ipods, tons of free Techron, $24 Craftsman 2.5 ton Jack and free Jack stands, 32 Inch LCD TV for $500 delivered are some of my latest deals... I have made it my homepage. Its made me so cheap I never use ATM's anymore I walk into a CVS with a Free coupon I printed off the website and get a free product, they charge sales tax, something like 12 cents, I then use my ATM/Check Card and ask for cash back, no fee!
I used to blow through money like a crack head, now I saved enough for a sizable deposit on another home after a few months at this site.
Even got my girls Victoria's Secret Valentine Gifts 30% off with free shipping and freebies thrown in....
