As a newbie on this site I've read all the efficient packing tips provided by helpful ED'ers but getting my wife to read them (or for that matter to follow them) is next to impossible. :tsk:

I'm getting ready for eurodelivery pickup of a six convertible in a couple of weeks. My wife and I will be picking up a friend of hers enroute in Geneva on the way to Paris). As you can imagine my wife's packing mode is of the type that one would have thought went out of style with the portable wardrobe steamer case. And I'm confident her friend is the same.

I haven't been able to find exact trunk dimensions anywhere (other than volume - which isn't very helpful for luggage planning purposes). The line that is commonly quoted (and I suspect is provided by BMW) is one large suitcase and two golfbags - again not very helpful for this situation. While I could go to the show-room and make accurate measurements of the trunk space in the car I was hoping someone on the forum cold help me out with some specific dimensions or other helpful tips on size and number of bags one can fit in the sixer trunk (with the top down of course).

Thanks in advance!

It would be a good idea to take your empty bags to the dealer and do an actuall "dry run" this is the bullet proof test... since dimensions can be tricky with curves and so...

Also, you can tell your wife to pack light and if she ran out of dresses there she can always buy from PARIs, no woman can resist that  once there, good luck

My 2 cents.. enjoy your trip...

Great idea - on both counts. Do a test run.

I travel with one rollerboard and one Tumi extra large briefcase type bag - period. Have gone away for 2weeks+ like this. If I need anything, I buy locally (I have certain articles of clothing from around the world). I never check bags either. My luggage miraculously always seems arrive with me because of this.

I bet you travel alone... The poor guy is going with his wife.. and if that was not enough.. a friend of HIS WIFE...

Miraculously, I'm leaving my wife and kid behind, wify just got a new job so she can't take off.... its both  and :thumbdwn: since I will miss them

Fitch,

I don't have exact dimensions, but I ED'd a 6er cab and here is what we carried:

Two roller bags, one was the BIG size, we call it Big Bertha. The other could slip by as a carry on if the airlines are lenient, typical business size that you would frequently see. We also had a duffle bag. Big Bertha could weigh as much as 100 lbs if that gives you an idea. All of this fit into the trunk with the top down. The key to bag size is depth as that is the limitation with the top down. The trunk is very big. If you can, take smaller pieces that are easily manuvered and that can lay flat and it should be no problem.

Let's face it, my wifes makeup-takle-box would make any women proud and we did O.K. You can always put something in the back seat for transport, but I would not leave it in the car unattended, too much temptation.

Travel light. If you are on the move no one will ever see you twice so who cares. We're heading out for another ED (16 days total) and I'll have one mid size roller and I'm done. My wife does good, but the makup-tackle-box is the killer!!

It looks to me that you have a chance to teach a lesson in packing, let them bring a huge suitcase that does not fit, and let her friend squeeze in the kids seat in the rear with a huge suitcase on her knees, I could already see the big smile on your face as you look in the mirror while driving fast through the mountains.....
Just joking.

Do your due diligence, give them the dimensions and hope her friend is tiny, as adults can not fit in the rear of a 650. I suggest that you bring your wife to the dealership and let her sit in the rear and see for herself, her friend must be warned.

Thanks folks - appreciate the tips and thoughts (some of which were hilarious  and shared with wife :eeps: ). Very helpful since she is now willing to schlepp down to dealer with me to see if her preferred packing modality can be accomodated by the sixer trunk. Her friend has been appropriately warned too :D .

I'll post dimensions and any other useful info for the edification of others with a similar situation on their hands once I've done my diligence.

Cheers!

MaxTimeOff is right - the trunk, even with the top down, is surprisingly large! I went down to the dealer who was very accommodating and packed in what I'm hoping is the maxmum luggage we'll be carrying between the two ladies and myself. Here are approximate sizes of what I was able to fit:

One 26X16X11 roller bag (airline check-in size)
Two 21X14X8.5 carry-on bags
Two 20X13X5 carry-on bags

And I figure I could still squash in a small duffle and a camera case (that may be the extent of "my" luggage ;)

The pictures may provide a better idea.

Those vacuum bags would help too. :)
