View Full Version : Too bad there wasn't at least one production run of E46s with the new V8.

Anyone else think it would've been nice to see at least one batch of E46s with the new V8? Since the E46 isn't competitive with the I6 against the Corvettes and Porsches it would've been nice to see it running with an 8 cylinder engine. Granted the E90 will have an 8 cylinder but it's also lugging around more weight.

I agree - it would be nice to have an E46 with a V8 because I am not a fan of the E90 body style. The now-retired M3 GTR was a beast.

Yeap a lot less weight.

E90 330 - 3285 pounds
E46 M3- 3415 pounds

The E90 race car is likely to be lighter than the E46 race car.

Funny I ran into this clip of a modded M against a Z06...now that it's been thrown around abit lately...http://videos.streetfire.net/Player.aspx?fileid=A2E0DD70-A455-4D13-87B0-9330D768F91B&kw=13&p=0

Well, obviously I've been misinformed because I thought the E90s were supposed to be bigger and heavier?

Bigger yes, heavier, not really. More aluminum.

There is, sorta. The M3 GTR. It had a 5.0 V8 from the E39 M5.

No it was not the 5L V8 from the M5 in the M3 GTR is was a new 4L V8. It was described as being very compact, but I don't think many pictures were taken of it. PTG built a few M3's with the M5 motor and raced them in the GrandAm for Bell Motorsports. Actually, I believe they could race the M3 in GrandAm with the M5 V8 now. BMW doesn't want to race the car with the M5 motor in it. They want it to race with the 6.

Yes, the M3 GTR was built to homologate the 4L V8 that BMW was running in ALMS. But they got banned anyway (Porsche whining) so they stopped making GTRs.

Yes, they could run the M5 S62 motor and there are teams still doing that, but it doesn't performae as well. And yes, PTG could have run teh V8 in Grand Am, but with a restrictor, so the actual power outputs would be similar.

Yeah, I know about the GTRs. For $250,000 my car better be red, speak italian, and run on marinara sauce! :p

If the new engine in the 550 was put in the new E90 that would be sweet mated, to a 6 Speed transmission. :bigpimp:

I am probably missing something, but the M3 GTR has a V8 and only produces 350BHP, isn't the I6 M3 333 HP?

Granted the GTR is lighter so it will probably out perform the M3.

There's something to be said for the I6 with the high redline.

I'm a straight-six man. Nothing against V8s, but a big straight-six with ITB sounds better than a rumbling V8 to me. Too bad we can only hear that in a TVR now.
