While in Europe (I did ED), I used to flash (high beam) to fellow E90's as a 'howdy' gesture and probably plan to do the same after getting the car here in US. Any one else does that?

Nope, I absolutely loathe high beaming. But when I drove a Volvo S80, soccer moms in S80s used to wave at me :(

the only vehicles I've ever seen and owned that flashed high beems back and forth to each other were
1) Jeeps (Wranglers)
2) Motorcycles
Those 2 were religiously friendly with each other. Never seen it in any other vehicle though.

Waving cool. High beam not cool. High beams will put me on high alert for the cop that is hiding ahead.

No. Just drive. :dunno: Wave, if you want, but flashing high beams lacks context and you'd probably confuse other drivers.

Last Saturday I notiiced another E90 heading towards me, I was so pleased to see another Titanium Silver I gave him the courtesy Flash High Beam acknowledgement, of course this was in the daytime so I know he did not mind.
I will "Flash" others if I am in the happy mood as I was on Saturday. Well I will always be in a happy mood when I am driving my car.

THAT's exactly what that's suppose to mean. Come on people... let's remember our priorities here... don't confuse the signals. If you want to say hi... throw the peace sign or wave  ...leave flashing for warning others about cops.

Uh, no. I live right outside Washington, DC. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a BMW. Hell, the first thing on the car that would need service is the switch for the high beams!
The only car I've ever had where people did something like that was a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Waving, mostly. Almost never high beams.

Well guys, there aren't too many E90s out on the streets as yet and I do not think it would be difficult to see that your fellow E90 is just saying HI  later on I know for sure I will stop this practice and just keep on trodding :drive: It's just showing our appreciation for the cool looking car roling past us.... :grouphug:

Flashing between BMWs (Not just 3ers) used to be a traditional thing with true enthusiasts that has gone by the wayside. (Anyone here remember that) That is what is it is really supposed to be. The flashing for cops seemed to take over with the general drivers of all models as the years went on.
I'm afraid I've to keep using high beam...

Dude,
I think your car is getting in your head :) . Its time to think truely outside the box,
i mean outside the car.

PS. If you want to flash highbeam or whatever as a way of communicating with other,

Yes it was a way of saying hi! back when BMW was getting started in the US - the majority of Bimmer owners did it - the 'club' was smaller then. I did it all the time in my 2002. Its funny to read the responses in this thread - folks who are unaware of the tradition. Waving is so ... yuppie ;)
PS - Xenons don't flash

That confused the hell out of me as well. Do Xenons not flash, or if you have Xenons then you shouldn't flash as high intensity light could blind the driver - but I only do this in broad dayligh - when I can see an oncoming e90 (I wouldn't be able to see it in the dark anyway).

On BMWs, when you flash your high beams (pull the stalk toward you), you light the inner halogen lamps (the ones closest to the grilles). I assume all BMWs behave this way since the quad-headlight configuration was introduced (see Ronin for some hot E34 M5 flashing action :D ).
The practical reason for keeping this flashing behavior with xenons is that xenons take a few seconds to reach full intensity, whereas halogens do it in a fraction of a second.

I save the flash for ahole drivers that pull some idiotic driving maneuver in front of me, works better than the horn at getting their pea brain's attention, unless they are on their cell phone and have no clue about what is going on around them.

Corvette owners wave to each other.
In my opinion any car that has a loyal following, will have a group of people that like to acknowledge other drivers that share their taste in a vehicle. If I waved to other BMW drivers, i feel like most of my waves would not be returned, as the percentage of owners that are actually enthusiasts is probably pretty low.

Regardless of where it started, or what it originally meant, I prefer to have it stand for "COPS AHEAD, BEWARE!". The reason I say this is because I was once saved from a very hefty speeding ticket by a kind warning from a kind citizen flashing. I am over the speed limit (When conditions are safe for doing so) all the time, and any ticket avoidance, is greatly appreciated.

You guys in southern California would have to be flashing people so often you'd have to have your high beams permanently on some sort of blinking mode.
Seriously, save the high beams to either warn of a cop or to notify someone that they're brighting you.

What nicer way is there of acknowledging a fellow 3 series driver than flashing your lights, causing him / her to be distracted and drive their brand new pride and joy into the vehicle ahead - or worse a pedestrian! :thumbdwn:

Maybe in UK they come with laser lights, mine are just Xenons - not powerful enough to 'BLIND' a person.

Of course not, flashing high beams in the daytime here in Texas means that there is a cop nearby.

In my opinion, you should only flash or wave if you and the other guy are driving classic or rare cars. I used to do this in my Classic Minis, especially when on a rally.
If you flashed every bugger in a BMW over here you would soon get fed up and look pretty stupid too.
Just my ha'penny's worth! :neener:
