Howdy... I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the CHP uses K anymore, or if they just use Ka? I've been getting annoyed at the speed sensors they threw up all around the bay area setting off my V1 and was thinking of turning off K as well as X.. except for those longer roadtrips/trips out of the bay area/times when i might be on state highways instead of interstates.

Thanks for any info you can provide on who uses what.

Hmm.. from what I've seen as of late... K band usually means stationary radar.. like those "Your Speed is..." signs or the mobile radar trailer things. (in addition to many shopping centers now... :banghead: )

I've only ever seen'em use Ka.... and now more recently some regions have turned to LIDAR. I believe one of the areas they've started using LIDAR is in the Vallejo area. :eeps: Saw a news report about it not too long ago.

oh HELL no... Laser? Crap, once they start using laser, the fun is over.. time to hand in your license. Washington State Patrol switched to laser, and I managed to get 4 speeding tickets in 1 year. Painful. Of course, they ticket you for anything up there.

I thought CHP couldn't use laser for some legal reason, and only cities/towns were using it... grrrrrrr

I was hit by K band from a motorcycle CHP unit in Marin and a CHP in an SUV in Stanislaus county. I probably saw the same news release that doeboy did - the CHP is indeed buying LIDAR.

That's interesting... I've seen the motorbike ones blasting Ka.... good to know to watch for K on the freeway as well...

The CHP hits I've gotten have been overwhelmingly Ka. But the difference between 99.9% and 100% could be a speeding ticket.

hey, i got the same issue. i used to drive on 280 between SF and SJ and never hear a beep. now i drive an all of a sudden BOOM - my V1 K band is on at 100%. started a few months ago. what are these speed sensors for? they dont photo ticket you, right? so what the point?

maybe its for people with radars to freak out and slow down :)

so whats the word - turn off K band?

I would turn off X before K. I've never seen anything detected with X except Home Depots. KA is almost universally accurate across the western states. Yesterday I got my first Laser detection by a cop on a bike in town. My 2 year old Escort Passport X50 made a noise I never had heard before.... and hope I don't hear it again. ;)

i already have X off, but K is giving me more and more false alarms (have only seen one cop with a K in my two years of having a radar). and here in suburbia hell, K can be pretty noisy also.

It looks like more and more of the newer automatic door openers are K. My V1 definitely false alot more on K than X these days :-( I've also noticed that some motocycle cops still uses K.

something i dont get with 511 traffic sensors - V1 only catches them from the rear. how come they dont bounce from the cars in front of me?

there is a way in V1 to disable "rear K band" alarms which could be super useful - this way i turn off these (and some others) false alarms but still keep K band for the front only.

btw, do you have 'ZHP' license plate? saw a 3er with that plate recently.

Nope, although that guy works at the same place I do. I've seen it around.

I had to turn off K last week. :tsk: The speed sensors every 1/2 mile or so on 101 north of Sausalito started operation and are all K-band. (Although it is a nice service, I wish the geniuses in authority had chosen some other band.)

on the plus side, now when your detector goes off, chances are, it is a radar :)

do you have a V1? with V1 you can turn offf "rear K band" only and for some reason my V1 only detects the sensors from the back.

On a few radar forums i went to, i noticed people saying CHP is starting to use Laser more and more. God help us all (especially given how jamming is illegal in CA).

Escort Solo S2. It was detecting both front and rear with remarkable reliability, so even if I could turn off rear, which I cannot... :dunno:

I'm getting some very infrequent laser alarms, but no CHP or other obvious laser in the area. Any ideas???

wierd, my V1 picks up the 511.org K-band only from the rear. didn't know escort radars also told you where signal came from.

there is one laser signal which is generated from that big "plasma-tv like" billboard between redwood city and san bruno on 101, but that is the only one i ever get hit with. i think once my laser went off at a light - either defective traffic light or it was trying to give me a ticket? could also be that your radar is more sensitive to lasers (and in the V1 manual i just remembered, they talk about how certain GM car tail-lights emit signals which set off laser)

The Lincoln Mark VIII which has a HUGE neon rear brakelight can set off the V1, as can certain model Explorers with neon third brake lights. Neon signs occasionally do it for me (but only at very short range, such as parking in front of a store). Laser cruise control systems (like on the Infiniti FX45) can do it as well.

I was noticing that I only picked up K signals in the rear going up north on 101, but coming back they were all in the front. Around the rest of the Bay Area I've noticed both front and rear K from those speed sensors.

I finally took the plunge and turned off K.. we'll see how much I'm kicking myself when I get my first ticket, but for now, the silence is great!

I plan on turning it back on on long trips.. Is K the new X? :)

They don't, but fortunately that's not a feature I care about. I figure if the thing is going off, who cares if the CHP is in front or rear? They'll give you a ticket either way. I'm slowing down and I'll figure out where the CHP is, later, rather than push it and start looking for the CHP before slowing down.
