I just ran across this on the Autospies website.

OMG that sounds almost too good. :yikes:
I am starting to feel a tad inadequate...

Wow. Maybe North America will finally get a diesel! I wonder which one ... oh yeah, 330d for sure.
Cool. Only three more years to wait!

Finally! Now the 350 I would go for!
Anyone care to speculate on the power output would be on a BMW 3.5 engine? So BMW will catch up to it rivals (in terms of power), but it'll take 2 years. Where will the rivals be in 2 years?
"- A six-speed manual will be offered
- iDrive finally makes its way into the 3
- A new 'paddle-shift' SMG will be available
- Styling will be the most conservative of all the BMW's
- Performance of the next 330 (won't be a 330, most likely it will be a 350) will rival the current M3"

Wouldn't the 350i designate a 5.0 liter engine? I think this is pure fantasy.. somebody's wishful thinking. It's almost as if that report merged what we've been saying in these forums for the past year...
Take it with a grain of salt. Pure Speculation.
I would have to agree on this. Drawing board type stuff. A 5.0 litre engine sounds too good to be true, but it would be nice! :D

You're right designation wise, but a 3.5 liter makes the most sense. The G35 is a 3.5 isn't it??
The report reads like a wish list. But if it were all true, then that would be sweet indeed. If not, just the engine upgrade part would do nicely :D

Nothing wrong with any of the rumors in that report, except for that they didn't mention that they're going to try and keep the weight down with all these new features.

Hopefully they will keep the weight down:
"- It will be less expensive and offer more standard features (due to competition from Infiniti, etc.)"

I had read (granted a while ago) from reputable sources, such as C&D, that the current 3-series would stick around until at least 2006 or 2007. I am curious because I am planning on ordering a coupe in 2004. But even if they do have a new 3-series in '05, it will likely only be the sedan, so I'd have to wait longer to get the coupe. Sorry, I am just thinking out loud.

If the E46 has a 7 year model run like the E36 did, the replacement will be introduced in late 2005 as a 2006 model.

There's no way they'd be able to fit a 5.0L in an inline 6 that would fit in the engine compartment. So I'd say its a 3.5L.
Sign me up for the diesel. I'd get one in an instant. The 330d probably makes close to 300lb/ft of torque!

That 350 has to be a typo... they must have meant 335.
So they'll wait another 3 years before the 6-speed comes out?? By then every other manufacturer than BMW will have 6-speed standard.

when I see it, I will believe it.

Many German tuneres have fit a 5.0L V8 (S62) into E46s :bigpimp:

The engine would have to be a 3.5 liter and likely would ba tagged 335. If they ever fit a 5.0 V8 in a 3-series, then what would you do in the corresponding M3, put in a 6.0 V12?

If I am not mistaken, aren't they looking to put a V8 in a production M3 so they will be allowed back into the LeMans series racing. From what I read, there were not allowed to race this year since there wasn't a mass produced V8 powered M3. Maybe that is where they got the idea for the 350:dunno:

we should make a post that BMW is coming out with a new twin turbo'd 470 hp cs1, and see if auto spies picks it up

Yup, you get that in a Hartge H50! That things a beast, the engine is too much for the chassis to handle. I have a video of it sliding all over the track.
What I meant was that you can't fit a 5.0L into an inline 6 configuration. I think 3.5L is about the limit for an I6. And somehow I always associate a 3series with the I6. Its part of the heritage, plus the I6 is mechanically perfectly balanced.

Yep. That's what I was thinking as I was reading it. EVERYTHING is like what WE would have wanted...
Not going to happen. The only thing on the list that I can see making to the next 3 series, is 1) 6 speed 2)i-Drive.

"Infiniti M45 update
Here's the scoop on pircing, specs and options "
Hard to believe an article that misspelled on their next topic!, shouldn't that be "pricing", unless there is actually an article on body piercing.

There's one thing I do fear about the next generation 3er.. With the 1er (and 2er) series coming out, they could pork out the next gen 3 (and 4) series. Just take a look at the size weight difference between the E30 and E46. I believe the E28 5 series weighted less and was sized smaller than our E46 3's...
Sure hope not anyway.:dunno:

Why not - My '65 Toyota Landcruiser had a 4.0L I6... Just because BMW's largest relatively modern I6 was 3.5 liters (remember the 535 made through '92 and the old 735?) doesn't mean they couldn't design a larger displacement engine. It may require a new block design though...
Then again, I don't think they'll take the displacement of current M54/S54 designs much higher -- maybe to 3.5L, but I doubt much more than that.

Not one to beat a dead horse...
Can you imagine the PISTON VELOCITY on that sort of engine at say, 6,000 rpm? At 4.0 liters, an I6 would have close to .7 liters per cylinder, and there simply isn't a geometry that will accomodate an engine that will rev at 6k+ RPM.
I'll bet your '65 Toyota Landcruiser probably has a redline of no higher than 4,500 rpm? That is why a 3.5 liter I6 will likely NOT happen on a new BMW I6, because there's just no way to accomodate the speed of the piston...The E46 M3 can and will only accomodate a 3.2 liter engine, and it's reported to have the highest piston velocity of ANY production engine in history.
A 3.5 I-6 will not likely to make any more horsepower than what the BMW 3.5 V-8 already make, 275 HP. It is a lot more logical to put the 3.5 liter Valvetronic V-8 into the next gen. top of the line 3 series than to develope a new 3.5 liter I-6. :dunno:
