I recently read on one of the BMW boards that cars purchased through the European Delivery plan do not come out of the dealers allocation and therefore the dealer may be able to be more willing to reduce the profit margin on a sale. Two different dealers have both insisted that the E.D. cars are deducted from their allocation. Does anyone know which is true? Knowing the answer would be helpful in my negotiations.
My understanding is that they do not come out of allocation for MY 2006; that is what my dealer tells me. However, willingness to deal seems to depend upon geography and demand. I got a great deal, but have had dealers tell me that they can sell all they can get for MSRP so they won't deal.
ED program cars do not count against (or for) the dealer allocation for a given model. There are a set number of cars (again per model) allocated for the overall ED program for U.S. customers. If there is not an ED slot for the month you want delivery for your desired model, your dealer may (or may not) give us one of his U.S. delivery allocations for ED. They are not crazy about doing this as giving up one of their normal allocations means one less car that they could have gotten U.S. MSRP (and possibly mark-up) on while the true ED allocation cars have a set price (which of course is less than U.S. MSRP).
I let my dealer know 9 months ahead that I wanted an ED 645Ci. When the time came, they could find an ED slot for the car, so they took a slot from their normal allocation and let me have ED on it (with the normal ED price). I am a good (repeat) customer at the dealership, but again they did not have to do this for me. They could have said, sorry there are no ED's that month for that model.
The downside of an ED for the dealer (besides less revenue) is that it looks like they sell fewer of a given model which effects their subsuquent allocations for that model. On the other hand, it lets them sell more cars than their normal U.S. allocations would otherwise give them. So you can see the dealer would have mixed emotions regarding an ED sale. My dealership does a lot of ED (they have been the U.S. leader in ED many years in the past) but I hear that some dealers are not that up on the program, so they may be reluctant or at least may not encourage an ED sale.
After speaking with about 5 different dealers about E.D., they all told me that the 6 series counts against allocation.
One of the dealers said that certain models count against E.D. and others do not, it's apparently at the discretion of BMW USA as to which models count against allocation and which don't. If I recall correctly, he said that the 5 series does not count against allocation, but the 6 does.
Of course, the dealers could all have been yanking my chain in order to sell the car at a higher price.
The dealer as all about the botom line. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

your dealer was covering for their own ignorance. The EDs for new 6 series DO come from dealer allocation... at least until further notice. You were lucky to find a dealer to sell you a 645 from their allocation at ED MSRP, I tried to get one from about 20 dealers in So.Cal and only found 2 willing dealers.
