After going to the MTBE 'standard' for CaliCrap gas about a year or so ago, it appears 76 has switched back to ethanol for their oxygenate. All the 76 stations I've driven past in the last week have big 'NO MTBE' banners hanging in front of them, along with the labeling change on the pumps, though they're still 91 octane

I seem to recall reading someplace that ethanlo can provide better performance than MTBE, which I suppose is a good thing.

Seems I've just been inattentive. Tosco's press release for this change is dated 7/22.

76 stations up this way have been MTBE-free for a while...
Haven't noticed any major change in perf or mpg (still getting ~22mpg around town).

This is one poisonous crap! This is also the reason why the City of Santa Monica is sueing the EPA for making the tap water unsafe to drink there...

Oh and BTW, the 100 octane that 76 sells definitely helps. At Vegas, with a 50/50 mix of 91 and 100, and only after 2 WOT applications, the car was much much mroe responsive at mid throttle.

Ironically Tosco says their 100 octane will remain MTBE.
