My 2000 328i with 17K miles failed the Virginia Emissions test-It said There is a problem with the On Board Diagnostic system -indicates there is a failure that could cause excess emissions-Trouble Codes:P1397 and P1478. Went to dealer-they said an M5 had the same thing happen. They are going to reset the OBD and take it (M5) back for another test-haven't heard results yet. Anybody have a similar story? Update: Re: "Warranty Nullifed?"Was worried that extended warranty would be invalidated when I replaced original battery with a type 91 battery and my instrument cluster went dead- well, everything worked out OK but I think extended warranty third-party company wanted to use a rebuilt cluster and the dealer said no-I think the dealer had put a new one in and absorbed it because they had sold me the warranty.

After failing the emissions test last month BMW of Sterling says that nothing is wrong with
the OBD and that the Virginia testing machine isn't reading correctly. So the OBD warranty doesn't apply. So they are going to reprogram the computer and retest-which will cost me at least $250-And there's nothing wrong with the car! Oh and I bet Virginia will reimburse me-RIGHT. Sterling said I'm not the first.
