Congrats. Just sort of invidiously takes over, doesn't it?

Hmm - new car? Bad economy - shouldn't do it. New car? It's sort of used, really. New car? It's an investment! Gotta have it!

Looks like mine except different rims and you're missing two doors.

Cosmos black/black Nappa.

Love those Vader seats...

Those of you familiar with the E36 M3 please educate me...Is there two different version of the side skirt on the E36 M3? That looked different than what I'm accustom to.

Well, this is from just general observation.

Most of the later model M3s that I've seen has the side skirt where the flare tucks in under the front 1/3rd of the skirt (kinda like my side skirt but not nearly as DRAMATIC). I have seen M3s with the 325/328 sports package skirts, but have always been an older E36 M3 (different front mesh grill...It's slats rather than a mesh).

Inquiring minds wants to know...

The slats (instead of mesh) means a luxury pkg M3 (they also got wood trim and M-Contour rims). I have the skirts you describe on my M3.

But if he's got a "WBS" VIN, there's no problem.

Yes, it does seem that quite a number of people are moving to E36 M3 both on this board and in general. There are also new buyers who shop for new E46 and end up with E36 M3. But when you think about it, it is not very strange when you are a car enthusiast not just a brand new BMW buyer. Especially if you are going to use it in environments other then a street. These 98 and 99 M3s are an excellent value right now. You can pick one for the price of a new 325i/ci. This seems to be no brainer almost. I think those who are not so much concerned with added luxury/civility of E46 but look for ultimate handling/performance should obviously look no further. E36 M3 is a great and SURPRISINGLY affordable option. I am actually surprised they are not 5-7 thousand more on average. This would change the decision process a little bit I think. Now it's really: should I get a new 325 or used M3...

It looks fearsome! Congrats.

Do post a review after you've spent some time with it. I'd really like to know how to compares to the 325Ci.

The "criss-cross" skirts were standard on the M3. The non-criss cross skirts were the same as those offered on the 328s, and came with the luxury package.

It's hard to tell from his picture, but it looks like he has the criss-cross, non luxury package skirts, which would be correct given the car's other equipment and vintage (no lux package in 99).

From what I saw (and what I infer from Hack's post), it looked to me like he has the non-criss-cross skirts.

Welcome to the E36M3 club! I, too, am a Cosmos/black Nappa owner.

Now about those skirts. From what I've read, there are two versions of ground effects. The less dramatic skirts, accompanied by the slat-style front air dam, are part of the luxury package. The lux package was only available through '97. From the pic, it looks like your side skirts are different from the ones on mine... but it could just be the angle of the photo. Mine (and most E36 M3s I've seen) have a distinct "crease" about 1/3 of the way down the skirt. Yours look kind of like the lux package skirts, but it's hard to tell.

EDIT - I just saw TD's track photo. That side skirt is what I'm talking about. If yours doesn't look like that, it's probably a luxury package skirt - and from what I understand, that skirt comes from the 328.

Yeah, there are two versions. To the best of my knowledge, these in the pics are the ones from standard 3-series of the 96-99 years as well as the M3 "Luxury" model (which has the ribbed air intake in the front air dam). The non-lux M3 Version has wilder, swoopier curves in front of the rear wheels and behind the front wheels. My 1998 M3 Cab has the wilder skirts and the "grated" air intake. The "Luxury" model also did NOT have the rubber lower lip extension on the front air dam.

CONGRATS DOUG!!! :D:D

Did I tell you guys that 3 months ago, on my regular route to work, I saw an E36 M3/4 in silver for sale parked outside a house. On some days, it will be there and other days not. Then for one whole week, I never seen the car again. Thinking it was sold..and today, it's back again for sale.

Is this some kind of a hint...?:dunno:

You should've seen the expression on my wife's face when I told her of my decision to cancel the 330Ci order. I think she would've killed me if I'd already bought the car first. :eeps: Now she's just convinced that I'm going to hop from car to car regularly, which I guess is not a bad thing for her to think. Her expectations have been managed, to use a consulting term. :p

When I picked up my car, there was an '01 Carbon Black M3 on the showroom floor that had just come in. When I asked about the car, I got the "If you even think about buying that car I will divorce you. Twice" look from the missus. Ergo, I drove home in a 330 Ci.

</hijack> Sorry Haus, your car still looks great.

Good call, Haus! I may be an oddball, but I still love the look of the E36 bodystyle. A well-kept E36 (particularly of the M variety) still turns my head to this day.

Get down on posting those pics. Many of us really want to view them, if only because we want to dream about how great it would be to own one.

interesting for you to post to us comparisons with your 325ci.
