There's a shop in Austin that specializes in BMW repairs. They are selling a 1992 BMW 525i Auto Wagon. I drove the car and it is in generally speaking good condition. Cosmetically it looked great. The interior was in pretty good shape too. We talked with a mechanic while there and he showed us everything, including putting the car on a lift. What do you all think of this car. I'm looking to get this as a second car because I'm putting too many miles on my '05 330i. I would like to be able to haul stuff in it, and my dog, but it would be nice if it was economical in terms of feul.
Pros:
Engine sounded good.
Handling great especially for a car of this age
Paint is in good condition
Brakes felt solid
Engine bay looked brand new inside.
Only 73K miles
AC works great
Dual sunroof - and all other electronics seem to work well
Pro for me - it's a wagon with lots of space which I'd like
Cons:
Engine felt weak below 2500 RPMs (ie slow 1st and 2nd gear starts)
Exhaust was very loud - the guy says the baffling in the muffler had probably blown out, and he could replace it with a new muffler
Lots of random creaks/rattles
Rear passenger window didn't work (he might be able to fix that too).
Con for me - I assume gas mileage isn't as good as a used Civic.
I think I can talk him down to about 4 to 5 thousand dollars for the car. Do you think it's worthwhile?
If anyone has one of these, what kind of gas mileage do you get with it?
