There's a shop in Austin that specializes in BMW repairs. They are selling a 1992 BMW 525i Auto Wagon. I drove the car and it is in generally speaking good condition. Cosmetically it looked great. The interior was in pretty good shape too. We talked with a mechanic while there and he showed us everything, including putting the car on a lift. What do you all think of this car. I'm looking to get this as a second car because I'm putting too many miles on my '05 330i. I would like to be able to haul stuff in it, and my dog, but it would be nice if it was economical in terms of feul.

Pros:
Engine sounded good.
Handling great especially for a car of this age
Paint is in good condition
Brakes felt solid
Engine bay looked brand new inside.
Only 73K miles
AC works great
Dual sunroof - and all other electronics seem to work well

Pro for me - it's a wagon with lots of space which I'd like

Cons:
Engine felt weak below 2500 RPMs (ie slow 1st and 2nd gear starts)
Exhaust was very loud - the guy says the baffling in the muffler had probably blown out, and he could replace it with a new muffler
Lots of random creaks/rattles
Rear passenger window didn't work (he might be able to fix that too).

Con for me - I assume gas mileage isn't as good as a used Civic.

I think I can talk him down to about 4 to 5 thousand dollars for the car. Do you think it's worthwhile?
If anyone has one of these, what kind of gas mileage do you get with it?

best thing is to check here... http://www.bimmer.info/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10

these guys are the e34 wizards

it sounds pricey.

Check this page as well for great info
http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/trouble/what_will_break.htm

those are the best places for the info you need.

If the maintenance was neglected on the touring, it could cost you a bundle to get it right, however, if you check the list and all seems good, then go for it!

The auto tranny could be an issue... put in reverse and give it a bit, see if it holds up and repeat!
I have just switched to Bimmerfest for my 330, but for the old 5 sseries, bimmerinfo rules.
