Neither, really. I remember liking 71, but I usually just choose the more direct route (based on where I need to go in Houston). I almost always take 290 for this reason. I wouldn't say either drive is really fun.

71, of course you have to take I-10 out to Columbus :thumbdwn:
If you are going to the north side of Austin take 290; south 71

Took 290 there. Got there at 5 pm, traffic was worst than LA :yikes: I assumed it is because there are limited number of through streets. The river runs east-west and the railroad track runs north-south. Took 71 back to Houston. Except for a charming town, Giddings along 290, there is not too much to write home about. :tsk:

Yup, welcome to Texas lol
Neither way is great to drive. But since I live up north, 290 was the much faster route.

When you get to Austin, take 2222 and have fun running circles around the lake.

I do a round trip to Austin at least once a week. I take I-10 and 71 simply because it's shorter for me. The small town cops on 71 could be a major PITA. Once I got pulled over for doing 78 in a 70, and he wrote me the ticket without running my plate and checking my insurance card. Guess speeding wasn't the reason he pulled me over...

Every small town in TX is like that. The Cop just wrote me up in Feb, 83/70 ticket in Corsicana (I-45 south of Dallas). He never bothered to check my expired CA plates, car was not yet registered in TX. Pled not guilty asked for a jury trial, asked for a continuance that lasted nearly 7 months, and finally set a court trial date in Sept. I asked a native TX at work if I had a chance fighting the ticket, and he said no way, it's a kangaroo court. The judge is also the jury and the clerk. Asked the clerk for leniency, paid the deferred adjudication, $166, no defensive driving required because I'm not licensed in TX, and submit a clean 90 day record from CA, which is easy since I'm not driving there for the next 90 days. :D

Getting a ticket in those small towns are major bummers. I've got one b4 and who the hell is going to go to court on a tuesday at 9 a.m . or something 100 miles from your home?
i'm sure most like me just end up paying it. funny thing is i had to make payment in the judge's name. that was weird i thought.... corruption?

I got my first ticket in years a couple of weeks ago heading up Hwy 6 to College Station. Just west of Navasota, the DPS car came over the rise, I stomped on the brakes, then the V1 went off, 85 in a 70. Don't know where the trooper was coming from, usually you get some advance warning as they shoot other cars. The trooper wanted to lecture me, I had to hold my tongue. Anyway, the court there won't allow deferred abjudication if you are eligible for Defensive Driving, so looks like I'm up for that again...
