I will be taking delivery of a 2006 M3 in a few weeks. My dealer qouted me approximately $525 for the OEM alarm installed. Is this unreasonable? I know that a few dealers with internet sales departments sell them for a lot less, but I would like it to have it installed by a dealer. What have any of you paid for OEM alarm installation?

1) buy the alarm from the parts dept.

2) install it yourself

3) have dealer activate it

Easy install, less than 45 minutes even with a cup of coffee or a beer in the middle.
$50 to have it activated at most any dealer.
If they want more, go elsewhere.

I've heard lots of quotes in the 500-600 range, so I guess 525 installed is "reasonable" for a dealer-installed system. No muss, no fuss -- it's only money. :D

But Bren and Cowboy Bepop are right; it's not a difficult installation. So $230ish for the parts, an hour of your time and $50 or so to activate it. Save a couple hundred.

ONLY advantage of having the dealer install is, is if it done prior to delivery, it is included in the new car warranty. Otherwise it is covered only with a 12 month parts warranty. Of course, I have never heard on any problems with one.

Negotiate. Or don't give them the business.

Yeah, I think I will try to negotiate a lower price for it. Are there any adjustments on the alarm itself for sensitivity and loudness of the horn?

yeah, alarms are great. I'm sure my was blazing when the thieves towed my car away!

I don't know about sensitivity, but you can select whether the unit chirps or not upon arming or disarming.

I called different places, and they were quoting me $400 range for parts alone. This included Pacific BMW internet sales. Where the heck are you guys getting the $230 range quotes 'cause I can't seem to find them.
Thanks.

I would look at the ads in the most recent Roundel issue. Pacific's ad does not list the E46 alarm, but there is at least one other dealer listing it for $225 (Denville BMW in NJ.)

List price for an non-convertible E46 alarm is $300. Are we talking about the same thing here?

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I ask them for an OEM alarm kit for an e46 m3. The price quotes from two of the dealerships are much higher than what you guys are saying it should cost. I'm wondering if I am somehow asking for the wrong part or kit.

You should be able to find the E46 coupe kit for $240 - I believe they quote this as the BMWCCA discount price but I don't think any of them check...and yes it's an easy DIY install - minus one large torx bolt under the cowling under the hood (for the siren?) that you'll need to have the proper torx bit for...I can't remember the exact size but read the instructions before you start tearing into it.

Circle BMW Internet parts dept has it for around the $220 mark regardless if you are a CCA member or not

I had the same situation when I contacted Pacific about a shift knob. They
first quoted me $80, which is retail. I then mentioned I wanted the INTERNET
price...$60. Just make sure to let them know you want the internet price.
Another thing, the internet price only applies to mail order. If you want to
do a local pick-up, they'll charge you the higher price.

Yeah, I think this is the answer.

Thanks. I just ordered it online for $225 from Circle BMW.

Thanks, everyone, for your help.
