When I get a new car* I like to change the oil initially at around 3,000 miles. While I'd be comfortable with BMW's interval suggestions otherwise, I do believe it's important to change the oil during the run in period. I did this on the 3.0CS, which ran like a top for 125,000 miles and is probably still going strong. The old Bavaria -- see signature below -- never got an oil change and lasted for over 300,000 miles, but it did get new oil occasionally to top it up.

Am I behind the times on the break-in-period oil change?

* Of course, I actually have to get the car. When it lies rotting at the VPC it doesn't count as my car yet. Is BMW going to get off its arse :bareass: and deliver me my car???

I read that The 500 mile oil change recommendation is not necessary today. Modern engines
are machined to such high tolerances that the initial "break-in" shavings are negligible. Also, any particles that would cause/iincrease wear will be trapped by the filter.

No feces? No oil change for 300K? What were they thinking of? That's almost like child abuse

Why do you assume she was thinking? She didn't change the oil, but it began to leak like a sieve and she had to add a lot of oil, so the last 100,000 miles it was like she was getting new oil every few thousand miles.

She was pretty unhappy it lasted only 300,000 miles. She thought that I somehow shorted her. (Originally I was going to buy her a new 2002Tii -- glad I didn't -- and instead I gave her the Bavaria and bought the 3.0CS.)

I haven't told the really sad story, however. I had the opportunity to buy a 507 that needed restoration, or a new horse for the girlfriend. They were both being sold for $5,000 in 1972! Since she had her BMW, we got the new horse. Otto Zipper (who was still alive then) bought the 507 and eventually his estate restored it.
