Had a rear tire go on me at about 75-80 mph. There was some vibration, but not a lot, also this hwy has a very rough concrete surface so I was only sure sth was wrong after turning off it and taking a turn. By the time I stopped, the sidewall was visibly damaged and there was a nail in the tread which I presume is the original cause.

Car was very stable at that speed and through the turn. Also jack/iron/etc. all worked well and the spare donut went on in five minutes. The new-to-me gps (garmin) was great at pointing me to several tire stores. Of course, no one seems to have 255/35-18 in stock.

Now the questions:
1. There is 7000 miles on the other side. I'm thinking it excessive to replace both. The tread seems quite deep though I didn't measure yet and wear seems even. Mostly highway, some spirited turns, and no events.

2. I have the bridgestone RE040's. I like their quietness and response. Not in love with the wet grip or the tramlining/nervousness. I find the ride a bit stiff for the level of performance they provides. However, I don't think I want to shell out for changing all four at this point (7000 miles). Is RE050 similar enough (it seems a little easier to find in stock) or should I make a point of putting on exactly the same one? Does anyone have experience with the 050?

Same thing happened to me back when I ad my 330, the tires were so new I could not get a tire for 30 days.

So I substituted a Continental. Aside from looks, could not tell any driving difference.

Best thing to do is go to www.tirerack.com and compare customer responses and tires ratings. The site will provide a numer of equivalent tires.

7k is to soon to replace, you should get at least 15k on the rear, closer to 20k on the fronts.

Yes, RE050A is the closest replacement of the RE040. But why go with a different tire if you can still get the RE040? Is it that difficult to find?
