I'm looking at a 745 LI from 2002 with 21,000 miles on it. I want to buy it but don't know if there are any differences in the 2002 models to the newer 2003, or 2004 models...let me know what you think...and if you think I should go ahead with the 2002 buy. Any other help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Beware the iDrive. I believe it was a calamity the first year of production. It is possible that the car you are looking at has low miles because it couldn't be driven very much.
If you read the threads on the 6ers and 7ers, you will see that they still have many, many electronics problems. The 2002 takes the cake, however. Run, do not walk, from this 7er!
The more recent the better, but my 650i, with a build date of LAST MONTH, still has a full cornucopia of electronic problems.
Hate to say I told you so, but I warned folks about the 650's .
The 645 have two years and lots of bugs worked out. Even though the 650 has a few more horses, I suspect there were other changes including software AND firmware, etc. As a result it is essentially like a first model year when it comes to the electronics.
Can you 650 drivers play MP3's? If you can, that explains why 645's cannot. BMW may be afriad to release the software due to issues in the 650's.
I think they rushed the 650's. Should have been one more year of 645's so they had time to work out 650 issues.
745Li seems to have slower engine/pedal response time and tends to float over bumps like a caddilac but the 745i, short wheel base, is more of a sporty car but without sacrificing a great ride/comfort/amenities. iDrive isn't as bad as people make it sound. It's just a little bit complicated but if your a young person like I you won't have too much trouble learning it.
Alot of newer Bimmers seem to have electronic problems due to the ill-coded iDrive system so it's all a matter of what's in your price range. Our car is an '02 and we havent had that many computer related problems it was more like little things like sqeaks in the seats, that were reasolved easily with some oil, a engine pully's that went bad. Not too bad stuff but still I would NEVER buy one of these cars without a warranty.
If you do choose to get one of these 7's get all the options because it greatly increases it's resell value and the satisfaction of the purchaser/you.

Stop this nonsense - its an E63 and nothing more. Four other 650 owners are terribly happy with there cars, and recent new 645 owner has issues similar to malibubimmers 650. It happens. Be glad yours is ok, but don't perpetuate the myth that the 650 is somehow a new model with some infancy issues. There is a new CCC processor that is supposed to be much faster, but I am not sure which build week it was expected to be introduce to all the 5 and 6 series vehicles. The 550 as well is out in several hands and it too is performing as it should, with 1 in 6 so far reporting some erratic symptoms with iDrive. It's 1 in 6 only because that is all that I have accounted for so far. I have not gotten to all the boards yet to get a decent count. The numbers of both 650 and 550 will mount fast and we can get a better feel for whats what. Even now as 525, 530 530xi, 525d, 535d models get delivered there are the inevitable idrive related gremlins. These E60 systems are 99% similar to the E63.
I've had my 650 for three days now and have not had one of the problems Malibubimmer discussed. There are always some fluke bugs, but you can't say universally that iDrive has problems.
Chuck92103's post in this thread after my post has hijacked it. We're in the wrong thread, guys. This is not my thread on problems with my 650i, but pureonyx's thread (in the wrong place) asking about a 750iL.
But since I'm here, let me respond to GeneArch and ctm: Except for the FTM failure (and I have had no occasion to re-initialize FTM, so I don't know if it will re-occur), all of the other electronic glitches are very minor. Nagging, bothersome, but they do not affect my enjoyment of a truly great car. At some point my iDrive may fail and it may need to be updated, but so far nothing else affects drivability and these things may never re-occur. I have given the electronics a good work out. Probably because I can't do that to the car for another 800 miles during break in.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
