View Full Version : Test Drove M5!!

My dealer got their M5 demo (that's right--an M5 demo! :) ) and I took it for a nice, long test drive yesterday. What a fantastic car! Naturally I didn't push it to the limit since it's in the break in period, but even so it was abundantly clear that this was one awesome car.

The exhaust note is very subdued when idling, and howls under acceleration. Great handling, terrific acceleration--it's very easy to go too fast in that car! It had the ventilated seats, and the rear side bolsters are nice and pronounced (and the active feature is great), but the bolsters in the seat bottom weren't as deeply cut as the sport seats in my 545i, for example, or the M multifunction sport seats in the brochure. They were very comfortable, but I prefer the non-ventilated sport seats since I like more deeply cut bolsters.

I spent a good amount of time seeing how SMG was, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Much, much, much better than the SMG I've driven in an M3 or 545i. Totally different. My fears of it being jerky are allayed. Driving in S5 and slightly lifting with each gear change, it was every bit as smooth as a traditional manual trans, and I didn't find the gear changes to be too slow, as some have commented. Certainly not instantaneous, but very much on par with a conventional manual. I even tried shifting without feathering the throttle and while not as smooth as when feathering, I really didn't find it objectionable--actually felt pretty sporty. In the interest of thoroughness, I even parallel parked twice--once while on an incline--and it was very smooth. I drove in stop and go traffic with no issues, and even drove in D5 for 5 minutes just to see what it was like, and with some judicious throttle feathering it was more than acceptable in shifting smoothness. Not an auto trans, but very acceptable. When in S mode I primarily paddle shifted, but also drove a few minutes shifting with the lever, which seems like it will be good for those times when we long time stick drivers go through withdrawals ;) . The drive lasted about an hour original.gif and I must say that after trying all the ways that I was concerned SMG wouldn't be comfortable, I give SMGIII 2 thumbs up.

The full leather interior, will all the exposed stitching, really makes it feel like a different car inside than my 545i, and the steering wheel is nice and beefy. When I got into my car to drive home, it felt like it was missing a few cylinders--I guess that would be 2...and 175 or so HP ;) ! I've never felt my car lacked power, but for the first half of the drive home, it just didn't seem as peppy as it usually does--of course, not a fair comparison!

For those in the bay area, the dealer is East Bay BMW in Pleasanton, and they sell at MSRP. Ask for Helen Akkawi (888-216-9269) and tell her Russ referred you. Needless to say, I have no interest other than to refer fellow enthusiasts.

I know exactly how you feel. After I test drove a 545i, that I eventually went back to buy, the drive home in my 330xi felt very much like it was missing something. Great performance evolved is all i can say.

Im sure the waiting list is several years out at MSRP. They're Mini list is still about 8-10 months out and they were introduced in 02.

Not much of a waiting list, my local dealer had 3, sold one, he has two left.

Caveat? 25k over MSRP. OUCH! :dunno:

Geez, $25K markup?

I have 1 on the showroom floor and there are 3 orders ahead of you on the M5, but its the only way to get one so place your order now.

From the same sales rep that I bought my 545i from. He made no mention of dealer markup beyond that of invoice to MSRP. I'm gonna give em a ring to clarify, but geez.

Edit:
No markup at my dealership. No discount, but no markup :D

all this talk of markup... is this supposed to be a limited run of some kind, or are the prices garnered merely a result of early heavy demand?

God I hope Not!!!

Unfortunately, the markup is fairly typical whenever a new M car is introduced. That said, I think $25k is a bit on the excessive side. Frickin' stealers.

Agreed, 25% is a bit much.

It is very easy to get an E60 M5 at MSRP. Only in California are dealers asking for a mark up. MANY dealers all over the country have M5s IN STOCK that are not spoken for and are being sold at MSRP. Even in California, I expect that in a few months MSRP will be the norm. There is NO reason to pay a mark up in the current market. On m5board.com, some who are closely following the market actually expect cars to be available below MSRP in the coming months...we'll see.

The situation is very different than when the E39 M5 came out...there were no cars available, the waits were long, and mark ups were the norm for the first few years.

Congratulations.

But be warned, life will never be the same again. :p

According to their website, Advantage BMW Downtown Houston has 3 available. The site lists their MSRP, I don't know if there is a markup. :dunno:

BMW North Scottsdale (AZ) has an M5 on there lot. As I was waiting for service on my 540 I was checking the car out inside and outside. Asked the sales guy are you asking MSRP? He said no, they're all going for 15K over MSRP and all our M5's are sold out for the next year. I said then why is this for sale, he said the buyer dropped out.....I told him it sounds like MSRP to me. He said good luck.

I'm going to wait.
