I've tried to search on the web but my work places just blocks most of the sites. (even yahoo and hotmail) Somehow, bimmerfest works fine except some images get filtered. Hope someone can give me some tips over the following situation.

We (in NJ) are selling a car to a buyer from NY. As far as I know, we just have to sign the title and turn in the plate on our end. Obviously he can't register the car unless he has taken over the title so the buyer is just wondering how can he drive the car to NY from NJ without a plate and proper registeration. Can he get some temp plate from NJ dmv?

Thanks,

You are going to have to check with your local DMV on that one. The questions about which state gets the sales taxes, how to transfer the title and have it registered by the time the sale is completed can be complicated. The laws vary from state to state, but NY and NJ probabily have interstate compacts that make it easier to do these types of transactions. Try the DMV website, alot of times these questions are awnsered in FAQ's or information pages.

Thanks,
Here in Outer Barbaria the party picking up the vehicle takes one plate off the vehicle that brought him or the set from his 2nd car at home. He`s on his own. With a notarized title and receipt from you it should suffice for a "reasonable" policeman. This of course is predicated on having called in an insurance "binder". Many policies allow 30 days for new owner to register

THings to do for the party selling the vehicle:

1. Get the Cashiers check
2. Sign the title over
3. Have both parties sign the bill of sale and give the buyer the original or copy or make 2 originals for both the buyer and seller.
4. Take the plates of the car and hang on to them. I think they must be destroyed unless they are vanity plates. Check with local DMV.
5. Give the car away

Things to do for buyer

1. Get the car insured (Need VIN number for this)
2. Get a temporary registration from your home state. In my state we can get a three day or 30 day temperory registration if you give the VIN number.
3. Take that registration with you when you go to buy the car.
4. Take the title and bill of sale and car from the buyer and pay the buyer (Has to be done exactly at the same time)
5. Use your temperory registration while you drive the car back to your home state
6. Register your car after doing the safety and emmisions etc. and you are done :)

Hope I didn't miss anything

I've contacted the DMV in my state (NJ) and they say you need to get a temp registration from NJ in order for the buyer to drive to NY. In your post, the buyer needs to get the registration from his home state, NY. So does it matter which one he get?

Make sure you turn in your plates, or NJ will come after you and invalidate your license.

The seller of my car let me drive home on his registration and insurance. But Mass doesn't allow temp tags, the bastards.

First, have the buyer register the car at NY DMV. Registration documents and plates are issued immediately at the DMV. He will have two forms to fill out, one of which needs to be filled out by buyer and seller. Signed title and a bill of sale will also be needed. Have buyer bring a checkbook, sales tax is paid at registration.
