First, M3 (S52 or S50) engine are NOT inline 4, its inline 6. Only inline 4 is the 318's. I hope we're talking about E36 and not an E30, because if its an E30 you're in the wrong fourm. Because if you're talking about the E30, then yes its a inline 4 (S14)
But price you listed is around that area, but paying $2300 and $1500 on the gearbox/diff is alittle to pricy for me and others..

The S14 (4cyl 192hp) is from the prev generation M3. It does make more power than your current motor but in general this conversion would be a bad idea. For one thing the e30 diff won't fit at all. Second, the s14 is an older, less advanced motor. It probably has more miles and doesn't come equipped with VANOS.
From the looks of things your talking about almost $7k and you'll still only be about as quick as a bone stock e36 325. The Downing Atlanta S/C will make the same power at 1/2 the price.
Hell, for 7 grand, you could piece together a custom stage 2 turbo kit!

Frost, you've got your paws on a piece of history. The E30 4cyl M3 lump was based on the original M10. This was the block that BM won their F1 championship with, 1.5 turbo... they didn't know what power it produced in qualifying because their dyno maxed at 1200 ps bhp. They estimated it was pushing 1400 bhp... conservative as usual...
You've got a powerful, hugely responsive motor & drive train, responsive being the operative word. Pay no attention to the 6cyl brigade.
When was the last time a 6 cyl won a WCR round... has it ever happened?
All the current & recent BMW works motorsport machines are 4 cyl, for a very good reason...
