View Full Version : MagnaFlows on S52 causing me headaches...

Do you guys think some resonators would help much? Anyone with the same setup running with resonators too? I can stand the drone at 60mph and its usually ok with the windows down around town, but man, if I cruise at 80mph and up, its really causing me headaches. Its just plain too loud at 3500rpms and up.

Are they new? They will take 1,000 miles or so to mellow out a bit. I had the same problem on my 540 when I did magnaflows.

no, not new at all. they've been on the car for awhile. I used to drive this car 1-2x a week only on the weekends so it didn't bother me all too much. but I figured, what a waste...such an awesome car and with a short 30 mile RT commute, I decided to put the car into daily driver status...it gets me to work 5 mins faster on days I'm late...hehe, but damn, it gives me headaches when I drive fast.

Haha, couldn't resist it huh? Just had some work done on my car; also new tires; I'm still shocked about their grip!

hahaha, yea man, I couldn't help it any more. I think I was torturing myself by not driving it. I'm not too worried about it getting dings at work anymore, I just double park in two parking stalls next to the store managers 745i and the security lady's 350z. I know she has the cameras on her car so I'm covered! :-)
I just got that MityVac so if you need to do your oil, let me know. Its really fast!

prescribe something for your ears? Your are a Pharmacist.
How many times I told you to keep it stock.

Thx man! I have the Topsider one; a little slower I think but works pretty good! Next to some spark plugs, I should be pretty set for a while. Have new brake pads, rotors, brake flush, differentail fluid and ... tires phew ;) Good I like that car so much

Yeah, I've never understood how some of you guys can tolerate modded exhausts. The drone is just horrible. Sure a nice intake growl is called for sometimes, but the constant buzz from an exhaust? No thanks. I loved the exhaust on my old M3, it's so much fun to just blow someone off effortlessly and they can barely even hear you, it's like you're not even trying! The louder the exhaust, the more it sounds like you're flogging your car just trying to get ahead.. even at part throttle people will think you're WOT and will be laughing at how slow you are :)
Not looking forward to having to go aftermarket when I do the dual-ear setup in the future...
Although I must admit the magaflows and other aftermarket exhausts look incredible.

well, the early morning rumble is awesome...you gotta hear it in person. Like I said, at low RPMs, the MFs sound badass...its like, a small block V8. At WOT, wow, it really roars. Very badass IMO, but at cruising speeds on the fwy, its insane in the membrane...

I managed to find a pair of 9" resonators from a local muffler shop. They did help knock the rumble down, but not enough in my S54. Ask BOL how they sound on an S52 -- he bought mine.

I took my Supersprints off after a year and went back to stock. I also couldn't take the constant drone from the rear. I think it's worse in the coupes because the enclosed rear acts like a resonance chamber.
Anyway, I now have some SS exhausts taking up space in the basement. I don't know if any horsepower is sitting down there with them or not, but my ears are much happier.

I did one (1) car that kept the stock exhaust (slightly modified by a local muffler shop). I would prefer a better long term solution though; this was a temporary fix until his SuperSprint arrived. I was concerned about eliminating one of the pipes dual walls (for insulation) and the close proximity of the C-V joints.

Maybe my car just sounds different than yours on the highway.....
I have magnaflows and they have a hilrious cold start sequence that makes the car rumble and gurgle and makes people take notice, then at idle, it just sits and hums a low note.... loud but nice. When I go to drive, up to about 2500 rpm, there is a louder droning sound, but once I am at 3k rpm, the car really quiets down unless I stick my foot in it.
Its got a hum on the highway, but it has never bothered me at all and I can talk to people without any trouble, and have never had any passengers complain. In fact, they all talk about how great it is. If I shift and punch it, then it gets fairly loud.
If you wanna hear loud magnflows, talk to Scott (MDex), his car is easily more than twice as loud as mine with his custom magnaflow setup.

Coupes pick up more noise (drivetrain/suspension/exhaust) than we do in the Rdstrs, even with the hardtop. Our cockpits are better isolated compared to the open hatch area.

A pair of these:

should kill the resonance.

I have Super Traps and they resonate at 2500 but by 3000 they really quite down inside. 1 nice thing about Super Traps by reducing Disc's I can quite the exhaust for trips and then open it up for the track or autox.

Where can I get some Super Traps?
But thanks to Randy, I think I will try one more thing before I put on the resonators. I'll post when I get the stuff put in.

Ok, I've got an appt tommorow morning at Al & Eds to put in some Dynamat Extreme in the rear floor, hatch, sides, and above the two mufflers. Hope this kills some of that resonance. They offered to do all that for only $200. Not bad IMO. Tell me if I'm off here or getting ripped off.

Seems decent to me, price-wise, although the weight will probably offset any performance gains from the exhaust :)
Also, seems to me a lot like motorcyclists -- they put on loud exhaust, and then wear earplugs because it's too annoying. In other words, if your exhaust is too loud for even you, maybe it's REALLY too loud to subject the rest of the world to.
That said, dynamat IS cheaper than a new exhaust!

If they're taking apart the rear hatch trim to install the sound deadening, I'd say you're ripping them off!
I deduct $200.00 if someone wants to bring me their Coupe with the rear (inner) sheetmetal exposed. So far, only one (1) Coupe owner has taken advantage of that.

When I had the interior out of the car doing the stereo, I kept a down comforter in the back to cover it up. It works great as a sound deadener. Might want to just throw one in the car. Not like you haul alof of stuff anyways. Pull the cover closed and you wont even know.

I too can't take the droning that has come about because of my Magnaflows. I don't want to take it on any cross country trips any more. The droning sucks big time. I have two set's of earplugs in my center console that I use on occasion. :yikes:
I don't want to add weight by adding dynomat material to my coupe. I'll give those inserts a try some day that someone posted a link to. Has anybody actually tried them?

the only time i thought my magnaflows were a little too loud is when Randy revved my car up inside his garage, but I didn't mind it being loud because it sounded so beautiful

I'm running a Remus exhaust system on my S52 coupe with a 3.73 diff (higher RPMs). Its not too bad at all on the highway at 4K rpms. It actually has a very reasonable tone until I stick my foot in it. Then you can hear it roar. I'm taking a long trip in it for Thanksgiving. If I come back deaf, I'll let you know. :D

well, now I realized how thin the floor is and how little insulation goes between the mufflers and the interior. The muffler tunnel on the outside was dynamatted and the floor above it aslo. The rear hatch was covered both on the inner plastic and inside sheetmetal. But you know what, not much of a difference. It was worth a shot. I plan on getting some more sound deadening foam to line the false floor to hope it helps.
What I should have done before I got it dynamatted was use my SPL meter to measure the actual sound level at 80mph before and after to get a scientific conclusion of the matter. If there was a decrease in sound/droning, it was not significant enough for me to feel better about the noise.

And therein lies the source of another problem...
Keep in mind, the more stuff you stick to that thin sheetmetal, the more trouble it will be to work with should you experience any structural failure.
