View Full Version : Threaded rod for homemade bushing puller?

Howdy.. looking to do my subframe bushings next week. Got the IE's already.

I've seen PbFut's homemade tool, although he didn't really describe which parts were needed from what I saw, it seems the parts description was only for another bushing puller (RTAB or something maybe?) Something with a different diameter.

I've found someone with a 3" pipe and cap that he says is perfect for the job, so I'm gonna pick it up from him.. but I'm trying to figure out what to do about this hardened rod. Without the pipe and cap, it's hard to figure out exactly what the rod should look like, and ordering on the web makes it worse -- but I'm not sure where I could find something locally.

Does this look appropriate:

Or should I be able to find it locally (Seattle) and not worry about ordering online? OTOH, it seems like most people have made do with NON hardened rods, and just broken about 3 of them.. maybe between some penetrating oil and a bulk purchase of cheap rods from home depot, I should be okay?

thanks!

Tacoma Screw, Metal Shorts

Get fine thread all-thread. Coarse thread is a pain in the a$$.

I used all-thread to make a puller for my rear wheel bearings. All I had available was coarse. It sucked.

Sweet, Tacoma Screw is just right up in Kirkland, been there before. Perfect, this way I can evaluate the parts together, make sure it's what I want. I just noticed the online one was 3 feet.. yeouch! Probably end up doing it cheaper at TS too.

Thanks for the advice.

Make sure it is hardened. We tried to make a rear trailing arm bushing removal tool with all thread, pulled the rod apart.

My suggestion, rent the tool or buy it and then sell it to someone else wanting to do the job. Realise that with one extra part you can use the tool on E30s or Z3s.
