you know whats kind of funny, nate. I had a similar tear in the rear subframe of my 1972 2002. I also lost the top right rear mount for the chapman strut (that was do more to rot, but I think the subframe failure quickened it's demise)

wonder how far back these problems go????

I know there were a lot of problems on E36s, espcially M3s in the rear and track cars in the front. I have heard of E30s as well, and a mechanic here says there are now many cases of E46 rears :(

Hey Nate, at our bmwcca meeting last night, (see link)http://www.njbmwcca.org/sched.htm
at Paul Miller BMW. I was talking to the shop forman for a while, and he told me they have repaired 4 subframe tears so far this year on E46's (three coupes, one sedan)

Ouch! You asked him, or did he mention it? Any more info?

That sucks! I hope that I don't become a repeat customer :(

No, I brought it up. We were looking over a 5 series that was on a frame machine. This car took quite a rear end hit, I couldn't believe it wasn't totaled. It was almost stoped on a highway, and was rear ended by a garbage truck doing about 35-40 MPH.

I was looking at the welding job that was being done on the repair, and asked the guy about sub frame. He also said they don't get too many of the older cars coming in, just the warrentee repairs.

Off topic, we were able to put about a dozen members cars up on lifts, and one guy brought his new Cooper S with him. That car has some wild stuff going on under it :yikes: The exhaust system must have been designed Rube Goldberg!!! Single pipe comes back to a muffler on the right side, crosses over to a resonator on the left side, the to a double tip out the rear. (the battery box is surrounded by the muffler and resonator.

There is also a little electric box fan down under the AC compressor!! (this thing is only visable from under the car)
