DISCLAIMER: this is just an OBERVATION. I DO NOT want to convert my 2002 to the 2006 facelift. So dont rag on me about being a poser.
Based on BMW's history of facelifts, mainly the e39 series, I think that if one had the money, one can change the exterior (front/rear) look of the 2002 to that of the 2006 without modification to the vehicle's frame (as in everything will be "bolt-on")
Example: The E39 5series. In 2001 BMW gave the 97-00 e39's a face lift. They put on the Celis LED tailights, and the angel eye headlights, as well as a new front bumper and color matched side moldings. Any 97-00 e39 owner could pick up a pair of tailights, headlights, new bumper cover, matching foglights, and paint their moldings to look like the 2001 E39's. I know this for a fact because I have seen it in person.
Same case for the E65. Upon close inspection I noticed that:
1)The outer taillights are the same shape. They only changed the internals to the 4 band Celis LED style taillight that the 2001 5series has.
2)The trunk lid has new tailights in it
3) headlights changed, maybe grill also
4) bumper changed
In conclusion, I believe that if a 2002 owner wanted to update to the 2006 look, all he would need to do is to buy:
1)The new outer tailights
2)New trunk lid and lights
3)New headlights
4)New bumper and foglights
The next few items are questionable, because the 2001 E39 angel eye headlights fit onto the 97-00 frontends without needing a new hood or fenders or even bumper for that matter. So one MIGHT also need to get from the 2006 E65:
1) new hood and grill
2) new fenders
A pricey modification, probably about 5 grand (needs paint too), but do-able nonetheless.
