Check out what AA has for your car.

If you have nothing aka stock. Its best not to "chip' the car, until you have atleast add some mod's parts.

Once you get all your mod on your, then get the chip tune for your car via AA, Jim C, Nick G, etc..

What necessary modifications do you have in mind Duck? I too have a stock E36 i would like to chip.

I recommend this item to BEFORE you get your car "chip"

1. M50/S50 manifold upgrade will net you around 15hp

2. Stromung or AA exhaust or any GOOD exhaust

3. AIT (airintake)

4. Change your Diff to 3.32LSD or 3.23LSD from 3.15LSD (manual)

5. Shrick cams (I hope, I spelled it right) pricey, but will net you some good HP.

Once you done 1-3 then get your car "chipped" by AA or Nickg or other tuners. Step four and five is option, but will help you open a new assh*** for anyone that wants to race you

Although a Conforti chip ina stock car will allow a higher redline that will actually allow you to get to the proper RPM to shift for maximum acceleration.

And BTW a 97 manual car should already HAVE a 3.23 rear.

I think most engine builders will agree it's not a particularly good idea to rev the S52 motors much higher than they already do. S50 ('95 M3) is a different story altogether.

I think the Conforti goes to 7K which isn't that much higher, but does allow proper shift points. Me thinks that BMW picked the tranny ratios for the Euro motor, not the US one. :)

FYI: the JimConforti shark injector and air intake (itg foam) are top of the line after years of trials and testing he perfected a balanced software upgrade. Goto turner motorsport. Others like bavauto offer the same exact chip with different packaging around $359.

The "chip" opens rev limits, top speed and throttle response but its a subtle difference, your not installing a turbo or supercharger. Make sure you level out the intake and exhaust before you chip it because your changing the timing. read the directions carefully if your doing the upgrade, if you use a cheap battery charger you could screw your ECU up and end up with a undrivable car.

When your ready to step up to headers i'll see you on the streets.

Unless you're stepping up to some big-buck long-tube headers you'll lose more than you'll gain swapping out the factory manifolds.
