The question I am having is if the 3 spoke steering wheel from a Z3 is the same as the 3 spoke steering wheel present in some later M3s. Will it be possible to swap them out? What about airbags and slip rings?

Thanks,
Florian

Yes. Slip ring and air bag is different since the M3's only had single stage air bags.
I have a single stage 3 spoke on my ti.

I just installed a 3 spoke on my 95. You already know the airbag is different, you will need the slipring, (clock spring) PN 32 34 1 162 111 and a new switch bracket PN 32 31 1 162 088. I got the airbag and slip ring from Bavarian Auto parts. A vender on bimmerfourms the air bag was $380 and the slipring was $80. The bracket I got from the dealer for a ***ping $3.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the reply. I am asking because I might be getting a 98 M3/4 soon. I have my original wheel from the M coupe available (the one I sent to AGLA I baought from eBay) so I was wondering if I could use that with the correct airbag and slipring.

Thanks,
Florian

That is really good information. Thanks a bunch. $380 is a lot better than $600+ for a new one.

The M3 ring (111) is in place for the '98. Just need the air bag 32 34 2 229 030 $630 retail.
Didn't need the bracket mentioned for the '95M3 for my '97ti. Would need to know the part number for the air bag used for the '95M3 to check the $380 quote.
The 030 bag dealer net is $378 so hard to believe that it can be had for $380.

The bracket might or might not be there. If the M3/4 has the 4 spoke wheel, it could be either. You will know if you need it when you pull the old 4 spoke and look at the bracket. If the carbon horn contact is at the bottom 5 oclock, and the slip ring locking pin is on the right at the 2 oclock position, you need the new bracket. The new bracket relocates the lock pin to the 10 oclock position.

You will also have to splice the horn wire from the new bag to the connector on the car.

Oh and I got bag and slip ring used.

My '97 318ti did not have the horn contact.

You may not have had the contack, but the hole was there. Look at the locking pin. If it is on the right, you would need the new bracket, on the left you don't.

Oh and BTW the slip ring 111 is not installed on my car. It is still the old one. Plus I need the bracket - I checked. I believe only non M3s got the 111 slip ring after a certain production date. M3s got it only if they have a 3 spoke steering wheel from the factory.
