Has anyone had any luck with Nextel as they are not on BMW's compatibility list. I was planning to upgrade to their BT enabled phone since my company uses the Nextel direct connect for its operation. From what the dealership told me, they said that its "supposed" to work accepting and making calls only, which at this point is better than picking up the phone.

While I don't know the answer, you should always post not only the service provider but the model phone you intend to use. Functionality and features vary, both by phones and service providers, as well as by the combination of the two.

Thanks for the info Malibu. I'll be more specific in the future. The model is a Nextel i605.

After asking them several times about phone compatibility, they kept telling me to look at the compatible phone list, which does not show any Nextel phones.
I told them I wanted info. about a specific model (i870) and if the info. on the compatibility list was set in stone. This is what they replied:

Thank you for your reply. We would be happy to clarify our response.

The list of compatible handsets I provided to you is the most updated.
Just this week we added the Motorola RAZR V3 for all carriers as a
compatible phone, so it is by no means set in stone. We work with
telephone manufacturers and wireless companies to receive pre-release copies of
their new phones and test them for compatability.

The list is updated anytime that we find another phone to work with our
system. Please keep in mind that the phones we recommend have to be
compatible with all features possible through the BMW Bluetooth system.
This includes address book synchronization, transferring calls, etc.
Many wireless handsets may be able to send or receive calls with our
system, but we will not recommend them because they do not allow for these
additional features.

Unfortunately, we do not have a list of non-recommended phones and
their functionality. If you have questions regarding a specific phone, we
recommend that you try it in person to determine the functionalities
available with it.

I hope this helps to explain more about the BMW Bluetooth system and
why we recommend the handsets that we do. If you have any further
questions, please let me know or feel free to contact your local BMW service
center, we would both be happy to help you.

Sincerely,

Customer Relations and Services

I will get the phone tomorrow and install it. I will let you guys know what I find out. I am sure that if this model works, the i605 can stand a chance too.
I can't wait to try that feature!

I think that we now have hope that the Nextel's will work in some capacity. It sounds like that if the features aren't 100% compatable it doesn't make the list. I guess I'll just have to check the list when I get delivery. Thanks for the info and let me know if you get hooked up.

I can't get my Nokia N90 T-Mobile to link up no matter what I try....

But what the advantage of linking it up to the car? The 7 had a keypad in the dash to dial from but not in the 6.

This has been discussed a lot (hint: search). You have to have a phone and service provider combination that's been approved by BMW. (BMW approves hardware- often influenced by the software or service provider - that matches its "profiles" for full functionality.)

Once your phone has "paired" with your iDrive via Bluetooth, you can dial verbally, by number or name. (Your saved name/number combinations come up on your iDrive A-Z screen, and the voice recognition software pronounces the names for you after you ask for a specific name.) Or, you can dial from the screen using the iDrive button. You don't need a phone keyboard. However, a keyboard would be useful when you have to dial a number that someone has turned into a name, such as 1-800-FLOWERS or somesuch.

You probably can't activate the iDrive phone screen yet since you haven't paired a phone. Thus, your comment about there being no keypad in the dash. It's there, but on the screen.

You definitely want a phone/service provider combination that provides you full functionality through the Bluetooth link. It allows you full use of the phone's features without fumbling for it, via iDrive. Trust me. You want it.
