I did a search but found nothing. I just bought a 98' iL and I really wanted the Navigation but this was a better price. Can I install it from scratch? Does anyone have instructions with pics?

I have never heard of it being done on a 7-Series, but I'm sure it's possible .

To give you an idea of what you're getting into here is a DIY guide on a 3-series. The procedure might be similar (if not worse) on a 7-Series. I guess it depends on how brave you are :)

http://www.bimmernav.com/ has tons of info also.
I think the earlier MKI,II, III systems are easily available on Ebay for much less than the MKIV.

go aftermarket. Much cheaper and the display/interface will be better. You can get a nice headunit that will play dvd's, cd's, mp3's, AND have navigation (kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse). For the price you will pay for all factory parts and the labor to install it, you can have a custom sound system put in that will far surpass whatever you have right now. I did a sound system with navi in my old 98 E39, its very straight forward. Not like the newer BMW's with their i-drive making it complicated to put in aftermarket add ons.

if you want JUST navigation, an aftermarket navi kit will work perfectly.

holy cow I just added up the prices from that list up there...over $4300 in parts alone. I can GARAUNTEE you that for $4000 you can have an AWESOME aftermarket sound system with navigation...parts AND labor included. Im talkin headunit, subwoofers, 3-way component speakers...the works.

example, my 98 E39:

Kenwood 7" widescreen dvd, cd, radio headunit
Kenwood DSP and pro logicII audio processor (uses optical audio connections)
Kenwood Navigation unit
ORION xtreme 1200 watt mono amp
XTANT 200x4 channel component amp
Diamond Audio HEX series components F/R
12" Image Dynamics IDmax v.3 subwoofer, 6inch magnet :yikes: 1000 watts rms

parts cost me about $2500. I did the labor myself. I have pics if you are interested.

Those are dealer list prices. You can easily find the same stuff used for 1/3rd or even less.
Ebay it.

I would love to see pics!!!

I am looking into used parts first and will determine if I can come out alot cheaper if not then it's aftermarket for me. I would like to see a 740 with aftermarket navi,dvd,cd,mp3
