I believe that to be correct. '03 and later, BMW built-in a cell phone for Assist use only.

Yes, you need the CPT 8000 "Motorola Startac" Phone.

You should be able to find it on ebay. If not let me know, i think i still have mine...

If your question is, does the phone have to be activated with a cell phone carrier in order for Assist to work, the answer is yes, it does.

Most CPT8000's were analog TDMA phones. Most cell phone carriers no longer support the TDMA platform. I believe Sprint/Nextel is the only national carrier who will still activate the Motorola Startac. You may also be able to find a local carrier who will.

Some CPT8000's were CDMA, and though Verizon supports the CDMA platform, they will no longer activate a non-E911 compliant phone. The CPT8000 is not E911 compliant.

You need to find out the platform of the phone you intend to use, and insure you can find a carrier who will activate it for service.

For anyone using a Verizon non-E911 compliant phone, Verizon has no intention of discontinuing service, or requiring upgrades. They will just not active new service to a non-E911 compliant phone.

Yes you can find a phoneon e-Bay but forget about getting the phone service activated, as it is not a GPS phone No-One will activate it by law.....Trust me I have tryed. The BMW Assist will however work.
