Dropped my car off for the E39 coil recall this morning and decided to spring for an extra oil change outside of the BMW maint. program (it's been about 8000 miles and i'm only halfway to my next service on the bars). The dealer (South Bay) is charging nearly $120. While outrageous, I didnt have time to debate it. I did recall that Center BMW in Sherman Oaks only charges $69 or so for an oil change.

Notwithstanding the fact that I should go to an indy or do it myself, just wondering, what does your dealer charge for an oil service/filter change?

Thanks, that sounds about right. I knew I was getting taken for $50.

FWIW, I think McKenna also charges about $120 for an oil change. If you buy 7 quarts of oil plus the filter from the dealer, doesn't it come to about $60 or so?

:eeps:

My last oil change (including the microfilters for interior air) cost ... 239 EUR.

:ouch:

And their coffee was terrible.

$94..

I bought the oil and filter for a friend of mine from the dealer's parts department... Even with my 20% BMWCCA discount, the total came to $37, just for the parts.. Given that, I don't think $94 seems out of line..

I think you had the Oil Service.

We are talking a simple oil/filter change.

True but noway the dealer pays what you would for the oil and filter. Not sure if the techs bill by the 1/4 hour but that would be the amount of time it would take a tech to do a simple oil filter change.

Ok. I had no clue that there was a difference!

Anyway, Inspection 1 only cost me 303 EUR.

Some dealerships offer relatively low prices for oil changes as a way to keep people thinking about using them for other repairs and maintenance. Call around and see if you can find a dealership in your area that does that, if you are so inclined. In the Boston area, Foreign Motors West at least used to do this; I'm not sure if they still do.

Otherwise, there is no reason to go to the dealership for an oil change other than if it's part of the free maintenance program. In metropolitan areas there are plenty of independent shops that specialize in BMW service and who will use the right parts and not over-torque the drain plug or filter.

Dealer asked within the hundred dollar figure. Can do it myself for about $38., but gave an independent shop $45. For 7 bucks it isn't worth the hastle of a DYI job. All the more reason to locate a reliable knowledgeable independent to take over when warranties expire.

IIRC, it was over $100 at Crevier - they charge $110/hour for labor.

$20.00 and I supply the oil. Yes, $20.00. Of course, I had to negotiate that rate :bigpimp:
