I don't think it's "jumped the shark" quite yet.

Some different faces around, but it all works itself out.

I am unclear as to whether you refer to the physical speed and/or ease of navigation, the quantity of posts, or their quality. Even from what I've seen the board certainly has lost much of it's lightness and frivolity with its recent growth of fractious behaviour. There is much more idle chatter.

I voted for option 3, it seemed to me for quite a while that this place was very slow. But I would always use the general board as my source of information. Lately, now that I'm using the view new posts option, it's definitely doing pretty well. But the new post list isn't as large as it is at other sites. Fanatics is often many pages long. Here it's about 1, maybe 2 pages.

I wonder if the big clamp-down over there will have any effect on that. :dunno:

I don't think so, the posts I've been seeing are from the non-trolls :)

The E46 is getting a bit stale, the E65 is growing on everyone so it doesn't ellicit much new hysteria (except for TD), people here aren't into modding much... so that leaves just a bunch of banter and OT stuff.

All that's left is lamenting the future demise of the stick shift and the wagon.

Matbe chit chat but the off run take overs have really diminished.

Volume is up but a lot of different people, which is a good thing, are bringing things to the table.

I'd rather read less pages w/higher quality content. The quality of content here is what may be in question.

True... but I think it's to do with a calming about the obsession by some people over post counts!

I am pretty new here, but I mostly lurk. I bet that there are a fair amount of lurkers. If a thread was started calling out lurkers, you'd probably see us all come out of the woodwork. We are here and some of us post occasionally.

I think the suggestion that this board is in decline is absurd. Membership is growing fast, the troll flare-up is subsided, and, for the most part, the conflict among old-time regulars has been pushed back to the back burner. And most of the threads under "View New Posts" have been ON topic for weeks.

Sounds good to me.

If you read the forums individually (I don't) I'm sure it looks slower. The occasional inrush of trolls is really annoying, though it seems thread-hijacking has gone down a LOT. I'm happy to see the Alex/Phil/Al/Mike 1000-message hijack threads go away (no offense to those guys).

Agreed.

BTW, if anyone want to see a board losing steam, go over to the Roadfly E46 board.

I now read it about once a day (and haven't posted in weeks). What's funny, though, is that I can now still see the "viewed" posts I read the prior day still on the first page when I come back the next day to scan for anything of interest. Posting there is WAY down.

And if you take away ff's posts, there's really almost nothing.

IMO the org has been played out for quite a while now. Not coincidentally much of it happened about the time the Fest came on line. I'm not saying that the posters that migrated over here were the lifeblood of the .org, but many did at least help the threads to keep rolling.

As for this board, yes, it may have been languishing a bit in the horse latitudes of late, but things will start to pick up once '03 deliveries are received and we can visually see some of the supposed changes (DVD Nav, etc.) on real live vehicles.

And then wait until the new vehicles like the Z4 are introduced. There should be a real big influx of traffic soon thereafter.

Looks wise I think it's a turd, but I'm sure most will disagree and that should be the subject of some good debate, as well as whether the performance numbers are really indicative of how good the car is, and how much better it is than the Z3, its predecessor.

In short I think this board is about to really take off.

After the "Who will be first" and "Tattoo" threads the number of those has significantly gone by the way side. Excluding Alan F.'s 4 v. 2 door :banghead:

There is still a good bit of fun within threads, but the big one's even for a regular participant :D got a little hard to follow.

Posting will also be on the upswing before next years big events like bimmerfest '03 and Tech Fest West (hint hint), and then O'fest '04 which is in LA.

Every board needs a good cross mix of contributors, and that includes some pranksters and practical jokers.

Personally, I come here as much to get a good laugh as I do to get others insights and opinions, and to pick up some information that might help with a car decision I might be making.

I truly miss Mike325xi, and though Alee still posts occassionally he too, for whatever reason, has sadly faded to the background.

Yeah, many threads were hi-jacked in mid-stream and it got to where you forgot what the thread was about to begin with, but personally most times I was rolling on the ground from laughter such that it never really bugged to me the extent that it did some others. :dunno:

So maybe we need just one more forum  and we can call it
"Hi, Jack", where members can post knowing that the thread will eventually be led down a frivolous, ludicrous path to the Holy Grail. :D

Well, i personally think the forum is certanly becoming different. Maybe it is because it is slowing, or maybe because there are fewer and fewer posts worth readong. I know it is losing it's luster to me because we have lost members i cared not to loose, and it is to the point where half the subjects that interest me are taboo and forbidden, or they have already be covered. Meaning (OT, as it was, is dead, and all my current BMW issues have been answered...thank bimmerfest) To me with overly sensitive people, some of which are extremely stubborn or maybe close minded, I have felt less and less desire to post at all. Where is everyones coat of thick skin? Why dont we ever delve into topics anymore. It only sounds like tippy toe, please dont take offense, church lady chatting. Where did all the passion go from the OT?

Seriously, where did the intesity go from some of our OT discussions?.... I think it left because the community is too PC, hell i dunno.:dunno:

I do agree the chat will pickup for bimmerfests.... I for one am really trying to attend one. Maybe if the threat of the looming economy ever dissipates i can.

I am not sure how this is a reply to what I wrote. Actually I will borrow that confusicon as well.

But, depending on the make-up of the community, will determine, the predominate and most popular topics. If say every member on this community was a woman, or maybe black, or maybe we were all satanic. Our conversations would be different. All, I am saying is that the general direction the OT posting is going these days does not spark any interest in me to respond with any once of passion. It seems like its all too touchy feely, lets not upset anyone. I dont blame anyone. Maybe, my urge to post is dwindling for other reasons, but that is the only reason that i can put a finger on. I wont say that it is because bimmerfest.com is loosing its attraction. Sheer numbers would prove me wrong. But, I can say, all my BMW questions have been answered, (non OT), and all my interest in being involved in OT discussions have subsided signifigantly due to the fact that I feel we have lost some good members, and any hint towards debate sends up mile high flames and PC alerts. I dont blame the board or myself or anything for why I in particular am posting much less. I think for me, the cause is either the community is changing, or the desire of our regulars to debate anything with passion is changing. FWIW I dont feel b-fest has peaked. It probably never will, especially with all the 1s and 2s coming out with brand new to the family owners. But I think the community has changed. Not for better or worse, just changed. I am saddened that debate never happens anymore, but hey, it is what the community wants.

Ichabod

The inherent problem with debate is that it requires the presentation of alternate and possibly contrarian views. I dare say we all hold to our cherished beliefs and said contrarian views fundamentally challenge those beliefs. Some welcome the exposure and the opportunity to expand ones viewpoint; others find them threatening and will make every effort to shout them down (imagine a child hands on ears singing loudly "I can't hear you lalalalalala"). At day's end it comes down to a shouting match and the loudest voice(s) win(s) unless emotion is excised from the discussion. Easier said than done. I enjoy the discussion, the shouting is enervating.

In rereading this I should point out that while I maintain its truth it is far too simplistic. Nothing is so immutable in the realm of human behaviour. To that end I should add that ot course one might find the wherewithall to open their mind to one argument while finding the very next to be wholly unacceptable.

The board is dominated by a fairly narrow focus.... and if you aren't in that narrow band, then what the hell are you doing here?? Get out!!!

Upgrades are pointless, there is already enough hp to do the "job". New designs suck. In car entertainment sucks. Current cars suck. Automatics suck. SMG sucks. iDrive sucks. S4's are too heavy. X5's suck. E39's suck. Non-wagons suck.
If it's not an M-car, then it sucks!

The owners of the avsforum HT board posted the question "Why are 75% of posts negative"? on their board.

I responded that 75% is a low number, and that probably 90% or more is the average at other boards.

There is too much negativity. I certainly hope that people are a little more positive in their personal lives than is exhibited on these boards.

I have not been around for nearly as long as many of you here, but I would like to offer my opinion as a newbie.

It seems like there is some discussion about having too many different forums. Personally, I like it a lot. I used to look at the general thread only, but now I love reading the motorsport thread, DIY thread, and the Flame threads (often very interesting). Putting threads into different categories may slow down the browing experience for some people, but for a newbie like myself I definitely like the organized structure of the forums.

As for the different forums, at a certain point I was looking at .org, fanatics, dtmpower, and bimmerfest. Now I stay almost exclusively at the fest. I haven't been around long enough to compare bimmerfest now vs bimmerfest in the past, but I can say bimmerfest is the best board out of all the boards I had been to, period.

Now, if only I know about Jon Shafter's dealership before I got my car..... I probably would have saved enough money to go to one or two extra track events.

Once again, bimmerfest is the best bimmer board IMO, period.

Societies like conformity. On the E46Fans site and probably DTMPower, conformity means modding your car. This community, with a few individual exceptions, generally takes a pretty tolerant view towards anything reasonable. I ignore, or at least discount the opinions of the outliers. I'm not sure what to make of Roadfly...most of the time I think drooling idiot, but that's not really fair.

The off topic forum has lost some of its political bent, which I think may be related to where this poll is coming from. I have an opinion as to why, but voicing that opinion wouldn't benefit this discussion. I have avoided posting my political opinions because I think the discussions have frequently descended into a mean place where the exchange of ideas stopped taking place. When the discussion heads into that territory, I lose interest pretty quickly.

I know, and I read it. I think it's time to let the off topic forum get kind of fluffy for a bit. Let tempers cool, and let people understand why they really enjoy coming up here to the Fest. By and large, this really is a nice community of people. We all need to recognize when it's time to back off a little.

Having said that, judicious moderation wouldn't hurt either. Not with the idea of regulating content, but more along the lines of keeping the intentions of posters on the up and up. I CAN be intimidated into not posting, and that sort of feeling does not benefit Cutter Motors.

That's not really fair... while Jon may be a moderator here, this is not the website of Cutter Motors. They have their own presence.

This has evolved into the website of an online enthusiast community, a to which Jon and Cutter Motors have contributed immensely, no doubt, but not strictly a Cutter Motors affair.

They should not be held accountable or liable for anything that gets posted here, unless Jon were to start doing fraudulent business here or something. An event I find highly unlikely! :D

EDIT- And now that I've read it, I'm jealous. Comraderie is damn cool too. The local DC area guys mostly all know each other and are friends as well. I could see us all doing something similar.

Yes quite. Let me interject though that in terms of BMW camraderie the residents of the San Francisco Bay Area are complete and utter dullards. Maybe its that we have no such wide open destinations as Death Valley. A rare instance of my envying my Southern Californian brethren.

This couldnt be the biggest load of crap. I frequent some mini fests, and have posted a couple, one is well documented on my webpage. And posted info here to all you bay guys, and noone came. Its that the bay guys either dont know of events, or are too lazy to go to them. But in either case, we have destinations which i would argue are far better than any setting in southern cali with the exception of maybe yosemite, but thats not really the drive that counts there.

If anyone wants to arrange a drive, let me know we could do one from redding to eureka, or from weott to eureka.

There are a lot of locals who showed up at last years, I can get with the guy who set that one up and well work something out. But the oppurtunity is there. If i could get 10 or more people to be willing, we could easily set up one of the best drives youll ever see. Highway 36. Or we could tour the unknown coast. Or 299.

Not to put to fine a point on it I would hardly consider Eureka/Humboldt to even be remotely part of the San Francisco Bay Area. That and I was not suggesting that we do not have beautiful drives in the area but rather that we are bereft of long wide open high speed stretches.
I will check out your website.

read my post in off topic. the oppurtunity is there with the brunt of the org hassel on my shoulders.

anyways, eureka itself is only 4 hours from san fran if you drive the speed limit. And it is the north coast bay area to me. maybe because my work division includes it i dunno.

Yup. Eureka is 300 miles from the SF Bay Area, as opposed to LA which is 350 miles away.

We don't have access to high speed desert runs around here, but we do have more than our fair share of twisties. For example, a run down the coast to Monterey or Big Sur would certainly be scenic.

Sure, V-Bulletin has its' relative weaknesses or deficiencies,
but you've got to admit, it also has some STRONG advantages,
such as the ability to revive threads from the dead...

There is no page #2, sorry, no new posts allowed problem.

I have to apologise for not reading replies-no time anymore!!
Just a quick note:
Where else can you get BMW specific questions answered-ANY KIND, political info/theories, and ask such random questions as what kind of coffee to what's the best oven on the market?
Why would you go anywhere else?
If I wanted "rice" I'd go elsewhere,
Or I'd ask opinions here about brands, type, etc. and get some good replies for my next meal!
Hopefully you know where I'm going with that.
The best post out there! And don't forget Jever! Where else can you find a buddy like that?
'Nite!

a) I have GOT to start looking at the dates on threads that appear new.
b) I'd like the last 15 minutes of my life back (It would have taken less time, but I had to pee)
c) This thread should serve to educate those who think the drama of late is a new thing to the fest
d) If we'd have listened to Brian, this thread would have already been deleted
