I took delivery of my new E60 M5 on December 8th, about a week later it was in the dealership for the Vanos issue, my problem EXACTLY mirrored the problem listed by another member, right down to the scarcity of the oil!

Now my baby is gone for another 7 days, including the weekend, the rear axel is making a horible grinding noise when I turn right. My service guy, whom I have trusted through 4 cars gave me some startling news.

He said they were going to wrap mine up and send it to Germany, since I have less than 1K miles, and never have gone over 5K RPM, there is no reason for the failure, and the engineers want to "confirm" that a defect exists. So they are shipping me a new axel from the east coast, but his tone tells me this is not the first blown Axel BMW has seen in the M5, otherwise why would they want to see mine?

Anyone else have this problem?

It could just be a precautionary measure after so many of the E46 M3 differentials failed early in production. I presume the M5 differential is very similar to the M3 diff.
