the biggest camparison is the $20k or so price difference and the facelift

same car except for phone, rounder fron,t different rear, and bluetooth. If you don't care for anything I just mentioned get the 02 save the $20K and buy a Ducatti. I bought a 02 just 2 months ago used the same principles....

Actually the differences are much bigger.
1) 360H.P 4.8liter engine vs 4.4Liter 325 H.P engine
2) upgraded i-drive
3) MP3 support
4) keyless enry system available
5) Bi-Xenon lights
6) lamps follow steering wheel
7) facelift - looks much better
8) much more reliable, 2002 had a lot of lemon cars
9) Bluetooth - an amazing feature.
10) much higher resale value
11) $40,000 difference, 2002 are selling cheap.
12) leather on i-drive knob
13) tiptronic on 2002 did not have upshift dunction
14) Satellite Radio option
15) rear entertainment system option
16) Standard PDC feature
17) DVD navigation system, 2002 is the old CD based
18) 2002 was first production year that had been improved many times by 2006, even the computer was upgraded since.

there are many more small differences, and I wouldrecomend to stay away from anythingmade before 2004.

1. Do you care for 35 more HP
2. Easy upgrade-Nav Froze took it back BMW installed DVD based nav and CPU 06 in a 02
3. are MP3's important to you
4. do you care if you can open the car w/o touching your key fob
5. What do bi Xenon mean to you
6. Does it matter that your head lights turn or not when cornering
7. personal preference on the facelift look
8. 02 was the first year, get one with low miles and warranty your all set
9. Bluetooth is big I must agree
10. are you really looking to make a buck - big luxury depreciates the fastest
11. what could you do w/ a extra $40K
12. not leather on the i drive knob - whoa
13. tiptronic would be pretty cool
14. Another faeture I wouldn't mind
15. do you need this option
16. find one with PDC - easy enough
17. see #2
18. 1st produced doesn't mean its bad, find a late 02 production

Your call big guy, your bucks. I wouldn't buy the newer one. Let someone else fall victim to the depreciation monster, and you benefit from them

The 06 is beautiful, has more to offer, and if I won the lottery I'd likely buy new over used. However, the 02 is also a stellar car so it depends where your price point is. I personally believe that spending half as much for an 02 is better than spending twice as much for an 06. The 02 & 03 did have some problems, but I think BMW did right and extended the warranties to 6yr/100K. You could always meet in the middle and go with an 04... they have some very nice features like comfort access (I think), adaptive headlights, humidity control, etc. and over the course of this year will be in it's biggest depreciation stage which spells savings for the used car buyer.

Buy whatever makes sense, if you lease however, your payments and depreciation on the 2006 will be very similar between a new car and used. the 2006 will lose about $6000 per year, and so will the 2002, why drive a used car?
Also the 2002 has so many bugs that the extended BMW warranty will not cover.
I would stay away from 2002, 2003 makes much more sense, iand it has an extra year of problem fixing and more warranty.

either way you are getting an really nice car. Try to steal a 2003 from the auction.
