Just thought I'd let everyone in on a discovery I made yesterday while shopping for motorcycle stuff, Motul RBF 600 for $9.85/ .5l bottle.

jvr826,

I'm new to the board and your post caught my attention. Do you or any of the folks on the board use RBF600 in your daily drivers, other than for track days? The reason I ask is that my understanding is that since RBF600 is more hygroscopic than the standard Motul DOT 4 fluid, it needs to be changed far more frequently. That's why I opted for the standard Motul stuff in my bike.

I've been using ATE Gold and will be putting in the RBF600 tomorrow for the first time. Since I do the BMWCCA track schools, they require new fluid every 6 months, so I change it at least twice a year.

If you don't track there's no need to use RBF600. ATE is plenty good enough. I'm no brake expert, but that's what I read here and elsewhere.

Let me know how the bleed goes and how much you had to use.

We got our helmets at Road Riders - great store.

Does this mean you'll be at Infineon March 4 & 5?

uhhhh, do our locations not give it away? ;)

My mom told me never to give my address away to strange guys on the internet (Ok, so it was over the phone...) but I'll give you a hint:

I can make it to the Toys 'R Us at Almaden & Blossom Hill in ~5 minutes....

You?

d'oh!

I raced bicylces (ala Tour de France) when I was a teenager and scared myself sufficiently to want to stay away from things with only two wheels and over 80 hp...

so, no I not b.a.r.f.

Bummer, my street bike is making about 86. :-)

I don't b.a.r.f though.

Fejj, i have the car lifted and awaiting UPS to show up with my Axxis Ultimates. The Hawk HT-10's are sitting here anxiously awaiting installation. Doing the rears first.

I'm going to Buttonwillow this weekend and didn't plan on Infineon in March. I went last year and am trying to do tracks I haven't done yet this year. But, as u know, it is a sickness and I've got it bad.

Very nice!

I did Thunderhill last August and had a blast. I advanced to C-group and really put the car thru it's paces. My first school with this car.

I'm headed to Buttonwillow this weekend, which is why I'm working on the brakes. I finished installing Axxis Ultimates out back and Hawk HT-10's up front, with the RBF 600.

Ffej, I went thru about 1.75l on this change, but I think I seriously overdid it. I was switching brands of fluid so I wanted to be sure I had all the old stuff outta there. This was my first time and I spent quite a while on it, about 4 hours, but I really took my time and had a few issues.

1) I can't get my car up on 4 jack stands cuz my race jack doesn't get it high enough to pull the ramps out from under the tires. So, I had to put the front on ramps back on stands and do the rears, then switch and do the fronts. I guess you could do it one corner at a time, but you're then relying on the jack to keep the car up and that's not wise.

2) I tried to back up the ramps and over the 2x8's I need to get the front up a tad more to fit the jack under. The correct procedure is to jack up the car and put the board under the tire. DUH!!! I spent some time doing it the hard way, but I won't next time.

3) I couldn't get the screen out of the fluid reservoir, no way now how! I tried with a needle nose pliars and just couldn't get it. So I turkey basted as much as I could.

4) My new power bleeder had a slight leak where the brass fitting screws into the cap. I had an IM with KrisL and decided teflon tape would do it - and that worked fine.

4) This isn't an issue, but an observation. With the pressure at 20psi as recommended, the fluid bleeds slowly. I was expecting it to go faster, but Kris clued me in and then my expectations were in line. I did about 400ml from each rear wheel and about 200 from each front. Serious guestimates, but I used the empty bottles to store the used fluid and kept track with those.

When I had a shop change my fluid last time, they used less than a liter to do the 4 corners and the clutch. So, I went thru alot of fluid. Since I'll use the same brand next time, I can probably get thru it in with a single liter.

The DIY at m3.madrussian.net was dead on and very well written. I've used a couple from his site and it's one of the best. I put disk brake quiet on the rear pads and will put it on the matching front set when I pull the HT-10's off after the weekend.

It's scary how easy this actually is. When you look at a dealership brake job for $800-1000 for rotors and pads, you can DIY it for about $300-400 bucks I think. Not sure what rotors cost, but the Ultimates are about $150 for both sets. Only special tool, other than the bleeder, is a 7mm allen socket. I didn't have a metric set.

Great way to spend an evening, but I'm psycho like that. People think I'm nuts, but I wrench on my truck (new shocks, coils, wires, and plugs), and on my bike (everything and anything), and on the Bimmer. I really enjoy doing it tho.

Thanks for the info. We're doing both cars on the 25th, should be fun. I like crawling under, around and in the cars, too. And I get way more out of it (and am probably WAY more careful) than when I take it to the shop. And it's less expensive, to boot!

A friend of ours, Zack, is coming over to help with the fetivities. He'll be at Buttonwillow this weekend. See the ///M in my sig? His looks, pretty much, exactly the same. If you get a chance, meet him. He's a really good guy.

And have a blast at the track!

Four and same deal. A is advanced, D is novice. Each instructor has only 2 students each day and u get 4x 25 minute (give/take) sessions per day. It's good clean fun!

You know, I don't know.:dunno:

At Sears in Nov, he ran in D, but can't imagine why he wouldn't have moved up to C. I know he's been to at least one more track day, probably more, since then.
